Closeness: noticeably less close than premium foils

The honest assessment first: the F5-5800 does not match the closeness of a premium foil shaver. In my alternating-morning comparison, my cheek showed a five-o’clock shadow about four hours after shaving with the Remington, where the Braun Series 9 Pro+ kept the same cheek smooth until roughly eight hours. That difference is real and you will see it if you need to look photo-perfect deep into the day.

The key point is that the gap is much smaller than the price difference suggests. For the price, the head design is more capable than I expected.

The dual intercept blades sitting between the foils are the F5-5800’s smartest feature. Cutting speed on dense areas like the neck is slower than a premium foil, so a thick beard will take more time and more passes, but for everyday maintenance shaving the system works.

Battery, charging, and the slow-charge caveat

Remington rates the battery at 60 minutes, and after six months of mixed use I measured 56 minutes from full to cut-off. That retention is solid, if not quite as strong as the premium shavers hold over a similar span. At four to five minutes per shave, a single charge handles around eleven shaves, which is roughly three weeks of weekday shaving before you need to plug in.

The real limitation is charging. It uses a standard barrel connector rather than USB-C, a full charge takes about four hours, and there is no quick-charge feature. For a once-a-day home shaver that is academic, since you charge it overnight occasionally and forget about it. For a travel shaver, where you might want a fast top-up before heading out with a dead battery, the slow charge is the F5-5800’s biggest practical drawback, and worth weighing if travel is its main job for you.

Sideburn trimmer, wet shaving, and durability

The pop-up sideburn trimmer is sharper and more accurate than I expected at this price. For squaring sideburn lines or tidying a moustache edge it does the job cleanly. It is not a replacement for a dedicated detail trimmer, but as an integrated extra it is genuinely useful rather than a token feature.

The shaver is fully waterproof and works under the shower or with shaving foam, and notably the wet shave is meaningfully closer than the dry shave, more so than the wet-versus-dry difference on premium foils. If closeness matters to you, wet-shaving with the F5-5800 closes most of the gap to a premium shaver. On durability, after six months the foils show visible wear and closeness has dropped a touch, so plan to replace the cassette around the one-year mark to keep shave quality up. The included travel pouch is flimsy and the cassettes cost more than you might expect for a budget shaver, both fair criticisms at this price.

Who should buy the Remington F5-5800?

Buy it if you want a reliable shaver on a tight budget, you need a travel or backup shaver, or you are a student setting up on your own and do not want to spend big on grooming. It is excellent value for a starter shaver, and wet-shaving with it gets you most of the way to a premium result.

Skip it if you have a dense, coarse beard, where a Panasonic Arc 5 is much faster, or you want the closest possible shave at any price, where the Braun Series 9 wins clearly, or if your skin is sensitive enough that a lower-grade foil would irritate it. The slow barrel-connector charging is also a real downside if quick top-ups matter to you.

The verdict

After six months as my travel and backup shaver, the Remington F5-5800 is the cheapest electric shaver I would actually put my name behind. It is not as close, as fast, or as quiet as a premium foil, and it charges slowly over an old-style barrel connector. But the closeness gap is far narrower than the price gap, the intercept blades genuinely help, and wet-shaving with it closes most of the remaining distance. As a starter shaver, a dorm essential, or a backup for the road, it punches well above its price, and that is exactly what makes it worth recommending.
