Pro-Lift B-004D Bottle Jack
The Pro-Lift bottle jack is small enough to fit in any trunk and lifts up to 4000 pounds, more than enough for most cars and small SUVs. Hydraulic action is smooth and the handle stores neatly. This is the one I keep in my daily driver.

Arcan ALJ3T Aluminum
If you change tires often or work on your own cars, the Arcan aluminum floor jack is worth the bigger footprint. 3 ton capacity, low profile, and the aluminum body weighs about a third of a steel jack of the same capacity. Saddle pad protects pinch welds.
BIG RED T82001 Bottle
The compact 2 ton BIG RED is the right pick for very small trunks where space is at a premium. Hatchbacks and small sedans benefit. Capacity is the limit, but it is enough for any compact or midsize car.
Powerbuilt 620471 Triple Lift
This is the unique pick. The Powerbuilt combines a bottle jack with a built-in jack stand, so once you lift you have a safety lock without setting up a separate stand. For trucks and tall SUVs the higher lift range is essential.
ToolPRO Electric Scissor
For elderly drivers or anyone with limited hand strength, the electric scissor jack plugs into the 12V outlet and lifts the car automatically. It is slower than hydraulic and needs a working battery, but it removes the muscle requirement.
Frequently asked
They are designed for emergency use only and they work, but I do not trust them on uneven shoulders. A small bottle jack or aluminum floor jack in the trunk is safer and faster.
Electric jacks are great if you have weak hands or change flats often. Manual is more reliable because there is no motor to burn out. I keep both, manual as a backup.
