Philips Norelco 9000 Prestige: best premium rotary
Philips is the original rotary maker and the 9000 Prestige is their best face shaver, but it works brilliantly on a head as well. Three rotating heads with V-track blades cut hair that is laying flat against the scalp without lifting and pulling. The shave is slightly less close than the Pitbull, but the build quality and skin feel are noticeably better. The trade off is the three head design takes more passes on a bald head, since you cover less area per stroke.
Braun Series 9 Pro+: best for the closest shave
If you want a foil shave on your head, the Series 9 Pro+ is the closest you will get without a real razor. The four cutting elements include a dedicated trimmer for longer hair, and the floating heads pivot to follow the curve of the scalp. The closest shave comes at a cost. The Remington Balder Pro is a 5-head rotary shaver in the same form factor as the Pitbull Gold, at about half the price. The blades are slightly less sharp from new, the housing feels less premium, and the battery life is similar at 90 minutes. For someone who shaves their head once a week, the Balder Pro covers the basics without spending premium money. Heavy daily users will probably want the Skull Shaver.
Andis Pro Foil Lithium: best for fades and edging
The Andis Pro Foil is technically a beard shaver, but it has become a staple for guys who fade the sides and shave the top. The single foil head cuts cleanly along hairlines, the rectangular body is easy to control around the ears and neck, and the lithium battery runs 80 minutes per charge.
