Three Season Workhorse
The MSR Hubba Hubba NX is the tent I recommend for someone buying their first three season tent. Symmetric setup, intuitive pole hubs, and a strong rainfly mean it goes up fast in a downpour. The 20 denier fabric is more durable than the Big Agnes for a small weight penalty. I have used a Hubba Hubba for five seasons and it still seals dry.
Family Tent for Car Camping
The REI Wonderland 6 has near vertical walls that turn a 6 person footprint into actual livable space. My family of four sleeps in it with gear and a small table. Two doors prevent the climbing over each other at night problem. The setup takes 15 minutes solo and the included rain fly is full coverage instead of the partial caps on cheaper tents.
Stormy Conditions
The Nemo Dagger OSMO 3 uses a fabric that does not stretch when wet, which means the fly stays taut through a night of rain. The vestibules are larger than most competitors which gives you a dry place to cook in shoulder season. I rode out a six hour rainstorm in mine in Olympic National Park and woke up dry.
Four Season Expedition
The Hilleberg Nallo 2 is a tunnel tent built for snow and high winds. I have only used one in winter conditions but the difference compared to three season tents is night and day. The Kerlon 1200 fabric does not stretch and the dual layer design keeps frost from forming on your sleeping bag. Expensive and worth it if your trips include real winter.

What to consider
For solo or pair backpacking under 8 miles a day, Copper Spur or Hubba Hubba. For families, Wonderland or a similar walls tent. For wet climates, Nemo Dagger with OSMO fabric. For real winter, Hilleberg or another tunnel tent. Size up by one person from your group count for comfort. Seam seal the fly the first season because factory seam tape eventually peels. Set up your tent in the backyard once before any trip to confirm all the pieces are there.
