Tineco Pure One S15 Pet
If you have pets and do not want to pay Dyson money, the Tineco is what I would buy. The auto-dirt sensor works well, ramping power when it hits the cat-hair zone next to my sofa. The mini motorized brush head pulls dander out of upholstery better than any tool I compared. Tineco's filter assembly is washable, which saves money on replacements. The plastic feels cheaper than the Dyson, but performance is comparable and it costs hundreds less.
Shark Stratos Cordless
For carpet specifically, the Shark Stratos is the strongest cordless I have tried. The DuoClean roller combines a soft front roller with a brush roll, so it picks up large debris and ground-in dust on the same pass. The odor neutralizer cartridge sounds like a marketing trick but actually masks pet smells in a small room. Battery is removable, which is the feature I will not give up. The wand is a touch heavier than the Dyson, but stability is excellent.
Dyson V8 Absolute
The V8 is old now but still my pick for anyone who wants Dyson quality without flagship pricing. The motor is plenty strong for hardwood and low-pile rugs, the battery lasts about 40 minutes on the low setting, and the accessories that come in the Absolute kit cover most needs. It is not as quiet as the V15 and the bin is smaller, but at roughly half the price, it is the sensible Dyson.
Black+Decker Powerseries+
For a small apartment, dorm, or as a secondary vacuum, the Black+Decker punches above its price. It is light, charges on a wall mount, and has enough suction for daily crumb patrol on hardwood. It will not replace a real vacuum for deep cleaning, but at well under 200 dollars, it is the unit I would buy for a college kid or for the upstairs of a two-floor home.

What to consider
Match the vacuum to your flooring first. Hardwood and tile prefer a soft roller, dense carpet needs a stiff brush bar, and pet households want both. Battery life on the lowest setting is the number that matters, since you almost never need Boost for more than a minute. Finally, pick a model with a removable battery if you can. That single feature roughly doubles the useful life of the vacuum and saves you from buying a new one when the cells fade.

For most homes, yes. Modern lithium-ion units pull as much air as mid-tier corded vacuums. If you have a multi-level home with heavy carpet and pets, you may still want a corded canister for deep monthly cleaning.
Most replaceable batteries hold up for three to five years of regular use before capacity drops noticeably. I always buy a model with user-swappable batteries so I am not throwing out the whole vacuum when the cell dies.
Only if you have severe dust allergies. The bases work, but they add 200 dollars to the price and take up floor space. I find emptying a bin every few uses fine.
