Mount it at least twice the distance away from anything taller than the gauge itself, with the opening level with the ground horizon. Eaves and trees block droplets and skew totals low.
Wireless gauges with data logging are great for trends, but a simple manual tube is the gold standard for accuracy. I run both in parallel and trust the manual when totals disagree.
