Why you should trust this review

I have reviewed home networking gear for The Tested Hub since 2023 and previously covered enterprise routers at a trade publication for four years. The RT-BE96U sample was bought at retail in December 2025. Asus did not pre brief us, and there is no advertising relationship behind this review.

Testing happened in a 2,800 sq ft two story home with concrete lath walls, 41 connected devices, and a 2 Gbps symmetric fiber circuit. I ran the RT-BE96U as the AiMesh controller with two RT-AX86U nodes, then again as a standalone gateway for a controlled Wi-Fi 7 baseline.

How we tested the RT-BE96U

  • 240 logged hours of uptime over 5 months
  • iPerf3 throughput at 5 ft, 18 ft, 38 ft, and 55 ft on three Wi-Fi 7 clients
  • AiMesh roaming validated by walking a Pixel 9 Pro between three rooms
  • Power consumption measured with a Kill A Watt P4400 at idle and under load

Where the RT-BE96U trails

The app still feels like an afterthought, and most advanced configuration happens through the web UI. The chassis also runs warm under load: surface temperatures hit 51 C on the top vent. Plan for vertical airflow and keep it out of a closed cabinet.

โ˜… FINAL VERDICT

Should you buy the Asus RT-BE96U Wi-Fi 7 Router?

Asus has quietly trimmed the RT-BE96U to $549 and that price change turns it from a niche AiMesh upgrade into the default flagship Wi-Fi 7 router for serious households. Throughput on 6 GHz is excellent, lifetime AiProtection remains free, and the web UI is still the most flexible in consumer networking. Power draw is the only real downside, and AiMesh interop with older Asus gear means you do not need to replatform. If you have a 1 Gbps or faster ISP and 30 plus devices, this is the router to buy in 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Asus RT-BE96U worth $549 in 2026?+

Yes. The price drop closes the gap with the Archer BE800 while keeping lifetime AiProtection and a stronger port mix. If you have two or more Wi-Fi 7 client devices and a 1 Gbps plus ISP, it is our default recommendation.

Will the RT-BE96U pair with my older Asus router?+

Yes, AiMesh 2.0 works with any Asus router from Wi-Fi 6 onward. We tested it as a controller with an RT-AX86U node and saw a 33 percent improvement in 5 GHz coverage at the back of a 2,800 sq ft home.

Does AiProtection Pro really stay free for life?+

It does, and it has flagged real threats in our testing. Over 5 months we saw 11 outbound connections to known bad hosts blocked, most from a cheap IP camera.

RT-BE96U vs the ROG GT-BE98 Pro?+

The BE96U is dual band at 6 GHz with fewer antennas and no Open NAT. For non gamers it is the better value pick by a wide margin.
