The combination of a working rim, a washable one piece build, and a sensible price makes it the easiest recommendation in the category for nervous curlers.

Skip it if your cat sleeps stretched out flat, prefers a covered cave to hide inside, or is older than twelve with stiff hips, because climbing over a seven inch rim becomes a real chore for an arthritic cat. In that last case a heated round bed with a lower entry is a kinder choice. Also avoid the cream and lighter shades if you have a long haired cat, since they show dirt fast. Taupe or charcoal hides daily life far better.

The verdict

After eight months the Sheri Donut has done the one thing a cat bed has to do, which is get used. My anxious tabby moved off the bookshelf and into the bed within a week, the older cat claimed the second one for night naps, and the unit has held a usable shape through seven washes. It is not indestructible and the loft does soften over time, but for the money there is no donut I trust more to actually pull a skittish cat into a deep, curled sleep. Buy the 23 inch Small, choose a darker color, and accept a little shedding in the first couple of washes.
