Why we tested the Bonavita 1.7L

Variable temperature kettles have come down in price significantly, and the Bonavita has been around long enough to prove itself across many kitchens. We tested it side by side with the Stagg EKG to see how much of the premium is style and how much is function.

What we liked

Temperature accuracy held within a single degree of the set point on every check we ran with an external probe. The wide body makes it useful for steeping multiple cups of tea at once or filling a French press with predictable water temperature.

What could be better

The spout pours faster and wider than a true gooseneck. For Chemex and Kalita brewing this is fine. For V60 enthusiasts, pair this with a hand pour gooseneck for the best of both worlds, or save up for the Stagg EKG.

Value

At $89 the Bonavita 1.7L Variable Temperature Kettle is the right Home & Kitchen in 2026.

โ˜… FINAL VERDICT

Should you buy the Bonavita 1.7L Variable Temperature Kettle?

The Bonavita 1.7L variable temperature kettle has been our backup kettle for two years and our daily kettle for the last five months. It heats fast, holds temperature with a one degree tolerance, and the wide body suits both pour over coffee and Japanese green tea. The spout is not a true gooseneck, so it is better paired with a flat bottom dripper than a V60. As a do everything kettle for a busy household it is excellent value at $89.

Frequently asked questions

Is it good for pour over coffee?+

It works well with flat bottom drippers like Kalita Wave and Chemex. For V60 pours a true gooseneck like the Stagg EKG gives more control.

How fast does it heat?+

From cold tap water to a 200F target takes about four to five minutes for one liter.

Does it remember the last temperature?+

No, it defaults back each power cycle. The Stagg EKG has memory if that matters to you.
