Why we tested

The $300-$600 espresso machine segment is the most contested in home coffee. Buyers want real 9-bar extraction - not the pressurized-basket workarounds that dominate under $200 - but they also want something that doesn’t require a barista certification to operate daily. The Breville Bambino Plus promises exactly that: true espresso performance in a machine a beginner can master in a week. After three months of daily shots, we have a detailed answer.

How we tested

We pulled 180+ shots over 12 weeks, dialing in with three different single-origin beans (Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, Colombian Huila, Brazilian Cerrado) at three grind sizes. We measured extraction temperature using a Scace device - the Bambino Plus held 198-201°F across 20 consecutive shots, well within the Specialty Coffee Association’s 195-205°F target. Shot timing was tracked on every pull: at a medium-fine grind with 18g in the double basket, we consistently hit 25-30 seconds for a 36g yield (1:2 ratio).

We also stress-tested the automatic steam wand by texturing 200ml of whole milk, oat milk, and 2% milk daily for two weeks. The machine’s thermocoil sensor cut steam reliably at 150°F on whole milk; oat milk required manual override to ~155°F for proper microfoam.

Cleaning: portafilter and basket wash after every session, backflush weekly with blind basket (no chemical needed), descale with Breville tablet solution at week 10 of testing.

Brew quality and performance

This is where the Bambino Plus earns its price. The ThermoJet system genuinely reaches extraction temperature in 3 seconds - we timed it at 2.8-3.1 seconds across 50 measurements. There’s no meaningful wait between switching from steam back to brew mode (a known weakness of single-boiler machines), taking just 35 seconds to cool down.

Pre-infusion - a 5-second low-pressure soak before full 9-bar kicks in - made a measurable difference on light roasts. Ethiopian naturals that tend to choke portafilters showed noticeably less channeling with pre-infusion active. The resulting shots had cleaner fruit notes and a more even extraction compared to machines without pre-infusion in this price range.

Shot quality data across our test: TDS measured at 8-10% (target range), extraction yield at 18-22%, no shot falling below 24 seconds or above 35 seconds once grind was dialed. Crema was thick and persistent on fresh beans, lasting 2-3 minutes before breaking.

The automatic steam wand is genuinely good for its category. It produces 140-155°F microfoam in about 40 seconds with whole milk. The texture is appropriate for flat whites and lattes - not quite the stretch quality a skilled barista achieves with a manual wand, but dramatically better than any pod or single-serve machine. Oat milk requires setting the manual temperature to 155°F; the default 140°F target leaves it slightly thin.

One honest limitation: the 54mm portafilter is proprietary. Third-party baskets exist but are limited compared to the 58mm ecosystem. For a home machine this barely matters, but it’s worth knowing.

Who should buy this

The Breville Bambino Plus is the right machine for someone who wants genuine espresso - not pod-machine approximations - and is willing to buy a burr grinder alongside it. Budget $600-$700 total (machine + Baratza Encore or similar) and you have a setup that will satisfy you for 5+ years and produce shots that embarrass $8 cafe drinks.

It’s wrong for anyone who wants an all-in-one solution out of the box without any grinder investment, or for advanced home baristas who want full manual steam wand control for competition-level latte art. For everyone between those extremes, it’s the most sensible espresso purchase under $500.

Product Verdict
Breville Barista Express Upgrade - adds built-in grinder for $200 more, better long-term value if you drink 2+ espressos daily.
De'Longhi EC155M Skip for real espresso - uses 15-bar pump pressure without pre-infusion, lacks temperature stability.

★ FINAL VERDICT

Should you buy the Breville Bambino Plus Espresso Machine?

The Bambino Plus is the most accessible true espresso machine under $500, delivering 9-bar extraction with 3-second heat-up and an automatic milk-texturing wand. It rewards a little grinder investment and punishes pre-ground coffee - but when dialed in, shots rival machines costing twice as much.

Frequently asked questions

Do I really need a separate grinder with the Bambino Plus?+

Yes, for best results. Pre-ground coffee oxidizes quickly and inconsistent particle size causes channeling, where water finds paths of least resistance and under-extracts. A $100-$150 conical burr grinder like the Baratza Encore transforms shot quality. The Bambino Plus's precision is wasted on pre-ground.

How often does the Bambino Plus need descaling?+

Breville recommends descaling every 2-3 months with regular use (1-2 shots daily). The machine tracks usage and illuminates a 'Clean Me' indicator. Using filtered water extends descaling intervals significantly - our test unit running filtered water needed descaling once in 3 months of daily use.
