Why we tested the Chemex 8-Cup

The Chemex predates the entire third wave coffee movement, and it still holds a spot in the permanent collection at MoMA. We wanted to see whether its reputation holds up against newer ceramic and plastic competitors.

What we liked

The cup is unbeatably clean. On a washed Ethiopian Yirgacheffe it tasted like cold steeped tea in the best way. The hourglass shape pours beautifully, and the wood collar stays cool to the touch even with boiling water inside.

What could be better

Filters are pricey, around 35 cents each for the bonded squares. A box lasts months in our kitchen, but the running cost is something to factor in.

Value

At $48 the Chemex Pour Over Coffee Maker 8-Cup is the right Home & Kitchen in 2026.

โ˜… FINAL VERDICT

Should you buy the Chemex Pour Over Coffee Maker 8-Cup?

The Chemex 8-cup is the brewer we use when company comes over. Its thick bonded filters strip more oils than any other paper on the market, producing the cleanest, most tea like cup you can make with a paper filter. The hourglass design is a kitchen icon for good reason. After months of use it has scratched our brewing itch for parties, family weekends, and slow Sunday mornings. It rewards patience and a careful pour.

Frequently asked questions

Do I really need Chemex brand filters?+

Yes. The thick bonded filters are central to the brewer's clean cup character. Generic filters tear easily and brew through too fast.

Which size should I buy?+

The 8-cup model is the best all rounder. It brews from 2 to 8 cups well, while the 3-cup is too small for guests.

How long should a brew take?+

Aim for 4 to 5 minutes total brew time for 40g of coffee, with a medium coarse grind.
