Most composting equipment looks like it belongs behind a shed. The Envirocycle Mini is designed to be seen - and that design choice opens up composting to apartment gardeners and patio growers who have nowhere to hide a conventional bin.

How We Tested

We tested the Envirocycle Mini over ten weeks of regular composting, focusing on the same metrics as our other composter tests - speed, odour, convenience - plus additional attention to the compost tea production feature. We collected and used the compost tea liquid on a test planting of container tomatoes, comparing growth against plants receiving conventional liquid fertiliser at the same interval.

We also specifically tested the footprint and operation in a tight patio space to assess whether it performs as promised for small-space composting.

Performance

Composting speed with the Envirocycle was comparable to other quality tumblers: we produced usable finished compost in approximately 28 days with temperatures in the 70-80ยฐF range and rolling every 2-3 days. This is slightly slower than the FCMP IM4000 (which reached finished compost in 23 days), likely because the single-chamber design means the drum was fuller for more of the composting period, slightly impeding airflow.

The rolling mechanism is different from frame-mounted tumblers and took a few sessions to become intuitive. Rather than spinning in place, the drum rolls across the base tray - you push the drum to roll it forward and back over the tray. The motion is easy but requires slightly more space around the unit than a fixed-frame tumbler. In our tight patio setup, we needed about 2 feet of clearance to roll comfortably.

Compost tea collection was the standout feature. Over ten weeks, the base tray accumulated approximately 1.5 litres of dark liquid per batch, which we diluted 1:10 and applied to container tomatoes weekly. The compost tea-fed tomatoes showed earlier fruit set and higher fruit count at harvest compared to the conventional liquid fertiliser control - a practical benefit that goes beyond the composting itself.

Odour was minimal throughout - a slight earthy smell on opening for turning, nothing detectable from normal distances. Appropriate for visible patio placement.

Who Should Buy This

The Envirocycle Mini is the right choice for apartment gardeners, patio growers with small spaces, and anyone for whom aesthetics and placement visibility matter. The compost tea collection is a genuine bonus that converts composting from a waste disposal activity into a soil amendment production system. For gardeners with more space and larger waste volumes, the FCMP IM4000โ€™s dual-chamber capacity and faster cycle time is the better specification.

โ˜… FINAL VERDICT

Should you buy the Envirocycle Mini Tumbling Composter and Compost Tea Maker?

The Envirocycle Mini is the most thoughtfully designed compact composter we have tested. The 17-gallon drum rolls on a base tray that collects nutrient-rich compost tea for liquid fertiliser, the all-in-one design requires no legs or separate stand, and the modern aesthetic makes it appropriate for visible patio or balcony placement. An excellent system for small-space composting.

Frequently asked questions

What is compost tea and how do I use it?+

Compost tea is the liquid that drains from actively composting material. It contains soluble nutrients and beneficial microorganisms. Dilute it 1:10 with water and apply to garden soil or use as a foliar spray. It is a free, natural liquid fertiliser produced as a byproduct of the composting process.

How does the Envirocycle Mini turn?+

The cylindrical drum sits on a wheeled base tray and rolls when you push it. Unlike frame-mounted tumblers where you spin the drum in place, the Envirocycle rolls across the base. Some users find this less convenient; others prefer the rolling motion.

Is the Envirocycle Mini suitable for a small apartment balcony?+

Yes. The compact footprint, attractive appearance, and odour-free operation (when managed correctly) make it one of the few composters appropriate for visible balcony placement. Check your building's composting rules before installing on a balcony.
