I bought the current formulation at retail in January 2026. Olay did not provide a sample and had no say in this review. I have reviewed skincare for years and have used Total Effects on and off since 2017, so I am not guessing at how this formula behaves over time, I am comparing it against my own memory of older versions of the same product.

For this review I used it every single morning under sunscreen for four months on combination skin, logging the things that actually decide whether a daily moisturizer is worth keeping. I also ran it head to head against a couple of obvious alternatives so I could tell you where it wins and where it does not, rather than reviewing it in a vacuum.

How we evaluated

My main read was makeup compatibility, because that is the test most drugstore moisturizers quietly fail. I layered it under three different sunscreens and two foundations and checked for pilling at sixty seconds, five minutes, and thirty minutes after application. I tracked hydration across the four months by noting tightness, flaking, and how my skin looked by midday, the real world version of a corneometer reading.

I also measured the unglamorous stuff: how the wide mouth jar dispensed and stayed sanitary, how many days it lasted at one fingertip dose per morning, and whether the fragrance settled or lingered. Four months was long enough to judge a daily AM moisturizer fairly across a full season change.

Makeup compatibility, the headline metric

I want to be precise about expectations though. Niacinamide at this level is a barrier and tone ingredient, not a wrinkle eraser. Over four months my skin looked calmer and more even, but the actual lines did not change, and they were never going to from a moisturizer. If wrinkle work is the goal, that has to come from a retinol or a growth factor, and this becomes the comfortable layer you put over it.

The jar caveat and seasonal fit

The packaging is the one real design miss. A wide mouth jar exposes the formula to air and fingers every time you open it, which is not ideal for any skincare. It is not a dealbreaker, but I would use a clean dedicated spatula and store it in a drawer rather than on an open shelf to slow oxidation. The jar otherwise empties cleanly down to the bottom.

On texture and seasons, this is a light cream, which is exactly right for spring and summer and a touch too light for very dry winter skin. I happily ran it through the warmer months and would swap to something richer when the air turns cold and dry. At one morning dose, the jar comfortably covered that warm season window for me.

Skip it if you expect a moisturizer to deliver wrinkle reversal, in which case buy a retinol. Skip it if you prefer fragrance free or jar free products, since it is lightly scented and comes in a jar. And skip it for very dry winter skin, where a richer cream will serve you better through the cold months.

Four months in, the Olay Total Effects 7-in-1 is the daily AM moisturizer I would hand to most people shopping the drugstore aisle. The pilling resistance is genuinely excellent, the niacinamide dose is real and useful, and the texture makes it effortless to layer under sunscreen and makeup. Accept that it is a moisturizer and not an anti-aging treatment, work around the jar, and tolerate a light fragrance, and you have one of the most quietly reliable everyday creams at this price.
