Why you should trust this review

I have shaved with electric razors for almost 16 years, mostly Braun with a brief older Arc 5 stint in 2022. The ARC5 ES-LV97-K reviewed here was bought at retail from Amazon in September 2025 for $269. Panasonic did not provide the unit.

I have a dense coarse beard with awkward grain on the neck. The Arc 5 line has been the closest competitor to my long-running Braun rotation since I came back to it in 2025.

How we tested the Panasonic ARC5 ES-LV97-K

  • 8 months of daily use, dry on weekdays and wet on weekends.
  • Battery runtime measured continuously from full charge until cut-off.
  • Cutting speed timed across the same beard area against the Braun Series 9 Pro for 4 weeks.
  • Closeness compared head-to-head with the Braun on cheek, jaw, and neck regions.
  • Cleaning station versus manual cleaning split-tested for 4 weeks. See our methodology.
  • Comfort tracked on a 1-to-10 self-rating scale.

Who should buy the Panasonic ARC5 LV97-K

Buy it if you have a thick or coarse beard, you want the fastest possible electric shave, you want the cleaning station included rather than added at extra cost, or you prefer the Panasonic head shape over the Braunโ€™s. Skip it if your priority is absolute closeness on a fine beard, you have small hands and find heavier shavers fatiguing, or you specifically prefer rotary feel.

Cutting speed: the standout feature

The 14,000 CPM linear motor is the fastest in any electric shaver I have used. The difference shows on dense beard areas: the neck, the under-chin, the moustache. With the Braun Series 9 the neck takes three to four passes, with the Panasonic the same area clears in two.

For me a full shave dropped from about 4 minutes (Braun) to about 3 minutes (Arc 5 LV97-K). That sounds small until you do it daily and add up the time over a year.

Closeness: 95 percent of the Braun

In direct head-to-head testing the Braun Series 9 Pro felt marginally closer on the cheek, perhaps a quarter of a millimetre. On the neck and jaw the Panasonic is at parity or slightly ahead because the faster motor handles dense flat-lying hair more efficiently.

The 30-degree precision-honed blades slice the hair at the angle barber shears use, which reduces tugging. After 8 months the comfort holds up, with no post-shave skin sensitivity.

Pivoting head: four directions

The active multi-fit head pivots in four directions and follows facial contours convincingly. On the jaw line the head stays flush more reliably than older Braun pivots. This is table stakes at the price.

Battery: 49 minutes measured

Panasonic rates 50 minutes. We measured 49 minutes after 8 months, which is 98 percent of rated. Battery retention is excellent. The charging dock connects via proprietary cable to the base station. No USB-C; this is the dated piece of the spec sheet.

Cleaning station: included and useful

The station charges, cleans, and dries the shaver in one cycle. Cartridges run about a month in daily use and refills cost $20. Over a year that is $240, which is enough to factor into ownership cost. The base Braun Series 9 Pro at $329 includes a station too, the LV97-K saves you $60 with comparable maintenance.

What is missing

No app, no display, no smart features. USB-C charging would be welcome. The LV97-K is a focused tool that does its job extremely well, the omissions are not faults.

The LV97-K in context

For thick beards and time-pressed mornings, the Panasonic ARC5 LV97-K is the shaver I would buy. For absolute closeness on a fine beard, the Braun Series 9 Pro is a small upgrade. Both are excellent. The Panasonic offers more value at the price.

โ˜… FINAL VERDICT

Should you buy the Panasonic ARC5 ES-LV97-K Electric Razor?

The Panasonic ARC5 ES-LV97-K is the fastest electric shaver I have used. The 14,000 CPM linear motor cuts through my coarse neck beard in two passes where the Braun needs three, the five 30-degree honed blades slice cleanly rather than rip, and the active multi-fit head pivots in four directions to follow facial contours. The bundled cleaning station handles maintenance automatically. After eight months the battery is still at 98 percent of rated runtime. At $269 it undercuts the Braun Series 9 Pro by $60 with the station included, and gives up only the slimmest closeness margin on the cheek.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Panasonic ARC5 LV97-K worth $269 in 2026?+

Yes. The included cleaning station is an $80 value, the cutting speed is the fastest in the category, and the closeness is within touching distance of the Braun Series 9 Pro. Excellent value for a premium shaver.

LV97-K vs LV97-S, what is the difference?+

Same internals. The K version has a black metallic finish, the S version is silver. Both ship with the same five blades, the same motor, and the same cleaning station. Buy whichever colour you prefer at the lower price.

How long does the battery actually last?+

Panasonic rates 50 minutes. We measured 49 minutes after 8 months of daily use, which is 98 percent retention. Each shave takes 3 to 5 minutes, so a charge handles roughly 10 to 16 sessions.

Is the cleaning station necessary?+

Not necessary, but useful. Manual cleaning under the tap works fine. The station extends foil lifespan slightly and saves the daily clean. The included station was the deciding factor for me over the no-station Braun base SKU at this price.
