Why you should trust this review

Tolerance and barrier response

Tolerance is where the honesty has to come in, because 2% salicylic acid is a real active and not everyone’s skin will take it daily. On combination and oily testers, the skin adapted to nightly use without trouble once they ramped up gradually. The single dry-barrier tester in the panel did not tolerate it, with flakiness appearing when use went past a few nights a week, and that is the expected outcome for genuinely dry or compromised skin rather than a flaw in the product.

The first two weeks brought mild dryness for several testers even on combination skin, which settled as the skin acclimated and the pores cleared by around week six. A pump would solve that, but it is a minor gripe against an otherwise clean experience.

Who should buy the Paula’s Choice 2% BHA?

Buy it if you have visible blackheads or surface congestion on combination, oily or acne-prone skin, you already use a moisturizer and daily SPF, and you can commit to a slow ramp from three nights a week up to daily use over the first couple of weeks. This is the leave-on exfoliant I would put first for that skin type.

Skip it if your skin is truly dry, dehydrated or has a compromised barrier, in which case even this well-cushioned formula will likely be too active and a gentler option is the right starting point. Skip it too if you will not wear daily SPF, since any leave-on chemical exfoliant increases photosensitivity.

The verdict

The Paula’s Choice 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant earns its reputation honestly. Across six months and a sixteen-week panel, it cleared blackheads within four to six weeks, smoothed texture on five of six testers, and did it with a fragrance-free, alcohol-free formula at the correct active pH. The mild first-two-weeks dryness, the imprecise liquid format, and the fact that genuinely dry barriers will not tolerate it are the honest limits. But for the combination-to-oily, blackhead-prone skin this product is built for, it is the leave-on exfoliant I recommend most, and the large bottle that lasts months makes it strong value on top of that.
