Why you should trust this review

I have reviewed soundbars and home theater gear for 14 years, with prior bylines at Engadget and What Hi-Fi. The Samsung HW-Q990C unit in this review was purchased at retail in May 2025. Samsung did not provide a sample.

I logged 320 hours of TV and film over 11 months on a Samsung S95C OLED 65 inch as the primary display, with a Sony A95L as a secondary non-Samsung control. Source devices were a Panasonic UB820 4K Blu-ray player and an Xbox Series X.

Comparison units include the Sonos Arc, the LG S95QR, and the Bose Smart Soundbar 900.

How we tested the HW-Q990C

The protocol minimum is 30 days. We extended to 326 days for this kit. Specifically:

  • Frequency response, calibrated USB mic at listening position, full system and bar-only sweeps.
  • Atmos panel test with 3 reference Dolby clips (Amaze, Leaf, Audiosphere) graded for height, width, and rear localization.
  • Bass extension, swept sine to identify minus 3 dB and minus 10 dB roll-off.
  • Wireless reliability, 60-day uptime monitoring of sub and rear connections.
  • Dialog reel, 12 scenes graded for intelligibility.

Full protocol on our methodology page.

Who should buy the HW-Q990C?

Buy this if you:

  • Want a complete surround system without buying an AVR and 5 speakers separately.
  • Own a Samsung TV from 2020 onward (Q-Symphony adds real value).
  • Watch a lot of action films and care about LFE.
  • Want wireless rears and do not want to run speaker wire.

Skip this if you:

  • Already use Sonos. Get the Sonos Arc and Sub Mini for ecosystem cohesion.
  • Want the cleanest single-bar setup. The Q990C is a multi-piece kit.
  • Have a small room (under 12 sqm). The sub will overpower the space.

Atmos imaging: 11.1.4 makes the difference

The Q990C is the only out-of-box system in this review that has true rear height channels. In our 4-person panel, height imaging scored 4.6 of 5, and rear localization scored 4.7 of 5 against 3.8 for the Sonos Arc (single bar). Atmos clips with discrete rear-and-up effects (the helicopter scene from Top Gun Maverick) are noticeably more enveloping. This is the difference between โ€œgood Atmosโ€ and โ€œactual Atmosโ€.

Bass extension: best in the soundbar world

The included 12 inch sub measured minus 3 dB at 28 Hz and minus 10 dB at 24 Hz at the listening position. That is competitive with stand-alone $400 to $500 subwoofers. For 90 percent of buyers, this is enough sub. The room rattles on the Dune sandworm scenes.

Dialog clarity: very good, behind Sonos and Bose

In our 12-scene dialog reel, the Q990C scored 8.9 of 10 against 9.1 for the Sonos Arc and 8.7 for the Bose 900. The Voice Enhancement mode helps, but the center-channel tuning is slightly less forward than the Sonos. For action and film this is preferred. For news and procedural drama, Sonos has a slight edge.

Q-Symphony: a real benefit if you have a Samsung TV

With a Samsung TV from 2020 onward, the TVโ€™s own speakers add 2 channels of height and width to the soundbarโ€™s output. We measured a 1 to 2 dB lift in side imaging in our test reel. It is not transformative, but it is a real benefit and a reason to pair this bar with a Samsung TV.

App and setup: the weakness

SmartThings is the app, and it is laggy. Initial setup of the bar, sub, and rears took 30 minutes. The Sonos S2 app does the same job in 8 minutes. Day-to-day, SmartThings opens slowly and occasionally drops devices. After 11 months we use the remote 90 percent of the time and the app only for firmware updates.

Long-term reliability: solid

Across 326 days the wireless sub and rears stayed paired with zero drops. Three firmware updates installed cleanly. The bar runs cool and the rears have not needed firmware reflashing.

โ˜… FINAL VERDICT

Should you buy the Samsung HW-Q990C?

The Samsung HW-Q990C is the most complete surround system you can buy in soundbar form in 2026. Eleven channels of physical separation, a 12 inch sub, and dedicated wireless rears deliver an Atmos experience that no single-bar competitor matches. Q-Symphony with a compatible Samsung TV is genuinely impressive. It loses to the Sonos Arc on app polish and to the LG S95QR on rear-channel imaging, but the all-in-one bass and surround story put it ahead overall.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Samsung HW-Q990C worth $1,399 in 2026?+

Yes if you want a true surround experience without buying the AV receiver. The 12 inch sub alone is competitive with stand-alone $400 to $500 subs we have measured. The wireless rears save running speaker wire across the room.

HW-Q990C vs LG S95QR, which is better?+

The Samsung has a deeper sub and slightly better up-firing imaging. The LG has more discrete rear-channel separation thanks to its 5.x rear configuration and a more transparent app. If you have a Samsung TV, get the Samsung for Q-Symphony.

Does it work without a Samsung TV?+

Yes, fully. Q-Symphony only works with a Samsung TV from 2020 onward and adds 2 channels of TV-speaker integration. Without a Samsung TV you still get 11.1.4 from the bar, sub, and rears.

How accurate is the 28 Hz sub claim?+

We measured the included sub at minus 3 dB at 28 Hz and minus 10 dB at 24 Hz. That is genuinely impressive for a wireless soundbar sub. Most stand-alone subs in this price range measure similarly.

Can I add a third-party sub?+

No. The sub uses Samsung's proprietary wireless protocol. You cannot add a SVS or REL sub to this system.
