Why you should trust this review
I have covered portable audio for 7 years across consumer tech outlets and bought the Sonos Roam SL unit in this review at retail in July 2025. Sonos did not provide a sample.
For 10 months the Roam SL lived in our home test rotation, jumping between kitchen, patio, and 2 short trips. We logged 220 hours of playback and 14 controlled pool dunks.
Comparison units include the Bose SoundLink Flex and the JBL Charge 5.
How we tested the Roam SL
Our portable speaker protocol minimum is 30 days. We extended to 303 days.
- Battery, 60 percent volume over Wi-Fi, 3 full runs to shutdown.
- Water, 14 pool dunks at 1 m for 30 seconds.
- Drop, 1 m onto tile and grass, 3 each.
- Handoff, AirPlay 2 to Sonos group transitions, 25 trials.
- Trueplay, measured response in 3 rooms before and after tuning.
Full protocol on our methodology page.
Sound: refined and balanced
The Roam SL is tuned flatter than the JBL Charge 5 and similar to the Bose SoundLink Flex in tonal balance. Mids are clean, treble is honest, and bass is tight but limited by the small driver. Trueplay tuning made a measurable 2 dB difference in 2 of our 3 test rooms.
Wi-Fi and AirPlay 2: the real reason to buy
Handoff inside the Sonos app worked on 25 of 25 trials. Drop the Roam SL into a kitchen group and music continues without a beat. AirPlay 2 latency from iPhone was under 200 ms in our tests.
Battery: short for portable use
We measured 9 hours 42 minutes against a 10-hour claim. That is fine for indoor sessions but tight for a full day outdoors. The JBL Charge 5 lasts twice as long.
Durability: solid for a tech-heavy unit
After 14 pool dunks and 2 drops onto tile the Roam SL still measures the same response curve. The end caps show light scuffs but no functional damage.
Who should buy the Roam SL
Buy if you already own Sonos or want AirPlay 2 plus Bluetooth in one travel-size speaker. Skip if you only need Bluetooth (get the Bose SoundLink Flex) or want a true all-day outdoor speaker (get the JBL Charge 5).
Value
At $159 the Sonos Roam SL Portable Speaker is the right Electronics in 2026.

Should you buy the Sonos Roam SL Portable Speaker?
The Sonos Roam SL is the best portable speaker for buyers who already live in the Sonos ecosystem in 2026. Wi-Fi handoff, AirPlay 2, and Trueplay tuning make it shine indoors, while IP67 and Bluetooth let it travel. Battery is short at 9 hours 42 minutes measured, and the missing microphone means no voice control. Still the best home and travel hybrid in the price range.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Sonos Roam SL worth $159 in 2026?+
Yes if you already own Sonos products or want AirPlay 2 plus Bluetooth in one speaker. If you only need Bluetooth, the Bose SoundLink Flex sounds similar and the JBL Charge 5 lasts twice as long on a charge.
Roam SL vs Roam 2, which?+
The Roam SL drops the microphone and voice assistant. If you want Alexa or Google Assistant, get the Roam 2. If you do not, save the money with the SL.
How accurate is the 10-hour battery rating?+
We measured 9 hours 42 minutes across 3 runs at 60 percent volume over Wi-Fi. Sonos is honest within 3 percent.
Does the Roam SL work without Wi-Fi?+
Yes on Bluetooth, but setup requires Wi-Fi and a Sonos account. Once paired it falls back to Bluetooth wherever you take it.
Can I pair two Roam SL speakers in stereo?+
Yes over Wi-Fi via the Sonos app. Bluetooth-only stereo pairing is not supported.
