The Vision M01 small bird cage is the cleanest cage I have used for seed-mess containment, thanks to a deep one-piece plastic base that traps shells a wire cage lets fall everywhere. The half-inch bar spacing is right for budgies and finches, the textured perches are kinder to bird feet than smooth dowels, and assembly is tool-free. It is tabletop-only with limited flight room, but for small birds and tidy floors it is excellent.
Why you should trust this review
I bought this cage and lived with the daily reality of it, the sweeping, the cleaning, the bird using it. Hagen had no involvement and provided no sample.
I have kept small birds in several wire cages before, so I can speak directly to how much the deep plastic base actually reduces the mess compared to a conventional grate-and-tray design.
How we evaluated
I set the cage up from the box, timed the tool-free assembly, and ran it as a real home for small birds over weeks of feeding, perching, and cleaning.
I paid particular attention to how much seed and shell ended up on the floor versus contained in the base, how the birds took to the textured perches, and how easy the base was to clean, including running it through the dishwasher as Hagen says you can.
Seed containment is the standout
The deep, one-piece plastic base is the whole reason to choose this cage. Where a typical wire cage lets shells and discarded seed scatter onto the floor, the M01’s tall base wall catches the vast majority of it inside the cage.
After weeks of use, the difference in floor mess compared to my previous wire cages was obvious. If a tidy room around the cage is a priority, this is the design feature that delivers it, and nothing else I have used contains shells as well.
Right sizing for small birds
The half-inch bar spacing is correct for budgies, finches, and canaries, close enough to keep small birds safe without letting heads or feet slip through. This is a cage purpose-built for that size of bird.
The flip side is that the internal flight room is genuinely small. This is not a cage for cockatiels or anything larger, and even for budgies it is best paired with regular out-of-cage time. Buy it for finches and budgies, not as a one-cage solution for bigger species.
Perches, doors, and cleaning
The included textured plastic perches are friendlier to bird feet than the smooth dowels many cages ship with, giving better grip and varied foot positions. The cage also has a front main door plus two side feed-cup doors, so refilling food does not mean opening the whole front.
Cleaning is a real strength. The plastic base is dishwasher-safe on the top rack per Hagen, which makes the weekly deep clean far less of a chore than scrubbing a wire tray by hand.
The practical limitations
It is tabletop-only with no stand included, so you will need a sturdy surface to set it on, and a stand is an extra purchase if you want one. Plan placement before it arrives.
Over time the plastic base can scratch at the door track from repeated use, and replacement perches and accessories are Hagen-specific and run a little pricier than generic parts. Neither is a dealbreaker, but they shape the long-term cost.
Who should buy the Vision M01 Bird Cage Small?
Buy it if:
- You keep budgies, finches, or canaries and want a tidy floor.
- Seed-shell containment is a top priority for you.
- You want an easy-clean, dishwasher-safe base.
- You want kinder textured perches and tool-free assembly.
Skip it if:
- You keep cockatiels or larger birds that need more flight room.
- You want a cage with an included stand rather than tabletop placement.
- You want to use cheap generic perches and accessories.
- You need a primary cage where the bird spends nearly all its time.
The verdict
The Vision M01 earns its place for one clear reason: it contains seed mess better than any comparable wire cage I have used, which makes daily life with a small bird noticeably tidier. The correct bar spacing, textured perches, and dishwasher-safe base round it out nicely.
It is tabletop-only with limited flight room and ties you to Hagen accessories, so it is best as a thoughtfully sized home for small birds with out-of-cage time, not a cage for bigger species. For budgie and finch keepers who hate sweeping, it is an easy recommendation.

Vision M01 Bird Cage Small FAQs
If seed mess is your main complaint, yes. The deep plastic base catches a far higher share of shells than a wire-only cage of the same footprint, and the textured plastic perches are friendlier to bird feet than dowels.
Vision M01 wins on seed containment because of the deep plastic base. Mid-West has slightly more durable wire mesh and feels closer to a long-lifespan cage. Pick Vision if seed mess is the priority and Mid-West if frame longevity is.
Yes for sleeping and feeding with daily out-of-cage flight. Two budgies will outgrow this footprint as a permanent housing solution, plan a Yaheetech 53 or Prevue flight cage by year two.
Yes per Hagen and per veterinary references on perch ergonomics. Textured plastic is friendlier to bird feet than smooth dowel because it varies grip pressure across the foot.
Yes on the top rack per Hagen. Owners commonly hand wash the base instead because the door track and feed cup attachments hold soap residue if not rinsed thoroughly.
