Why we tested the VIVOSUN 5ft Cage

The 5-foot height category sits between standard 54-inch cones and premium adjustable 6-foot cages. We tested the VIVOSUN 5ft cage because this is exactly the height that most home gardeners need: tall enough for indeterminate tomatoes through a typical season, without the premium price of adjustable designs.

We used two VIVOSUN 5ft cages in our test plot supporting Mortgage Lifter and Black Krim indeterminate varieties through a full growing season. Both varieties consistently reach 5-6 feet in our test garden.

How we tested the VIVOSUN 5ft Cage

  • Installed June 1, removed post-harvest September 30
  • Monitored cage height adequacy as plants grew (both varieties reached 58-62 inches by season end)
  • Assessed powder coat rust resistance by inspection at 30-day intervals
  • Tested base stability in a moderate wind event in August
  • Compared ring spacing against Titan cage for harvest access

Who should buy the VIVOSUN 5ft Cage?

Buy this if: You grow standard to large indeterminate tomatoes and want more height than a 54-inch cage without moving to premium adjustable designs. Also a good choice if rust resistance from a powder-coat finish matters to you, or if the 4-leg base versus the traditional 3-leg design appeals for stability.

Skip this if: Your plants regularly exceed 5 feet and you need 6 feet of support. The Gardenerโ€™s Blue Ribbon Ultomato at $25 per unit with a 6-foot adjustable height and fold-flat storage is a better value at a similar price point. Also skip if storage footprint is a concern; this cage does not fold flat.

Height: the key advantage

Both test plants grew to within 3-5 inches of the cage top by late September. For Mortgage Lifter in a typical season, 5 feet was sufficient to provide meaningful support through the entire fruiting period. For Black Krim, which grew slightly taller, the top 4 inches of plant extended above the cage rim but the structural support throughout the main fruiting zone was solid. In average home garden conditions, 5 feet handles most indeterminate varieties.

Rust resistance: powder coat makes a difference

After one full season including a wet August with standing water periods, the above-ground cage sections were completely free of rust. The powder coating is visibly thicker than the galvanized finish on the Titan cage, and the protection shows. At leg soil contact points, minor oxidation developed as expected on any steel product. This is normal and not structurally significant for multiple seasons.

Stability: four legs versus three

The four-leg base provides a more stable platform than traditional three-leg cone designs. In our August wind event, neither VIVOSUN cage showed any tendency to tip, while a three-leg Titan cage in the same bed required repositioning after the storm. The wider four-point base distributes load more evenly in soft soil.

Verdict

At $35 the VIVOSUN 5ft cage is the right tool for indeterminate tomato growers who want more height than the Titan offers at $18 but do not need the adjustable design of the Ultomato. The powder-coat finish and four-leg stability are genuine advantages for the price.

โ˜… FINAL VERDICT

Should you buy the VIVOSUN 5ft Heavy Duty Tomato Cage?

The VIVOSUN 5-foot cage fills the gap between standard 36-inch cones and premium 6-foot adjustable cages. The powder-coated finish held up through one wet season with no rust on the above-ground sections. At $35 per cage it costs more than the Titan, but the extra foot of height makes a real difference for most indeterminate varieties that run out of support on a 54-inch cage by August.

Frequently asked questions

Does 5 feet give enough height for indeterminate tomatoes?+

For most common indeterminate varieties including most heirloom types, 5 feet covers the plant through late summer. True vigorous indeterminates on rich soil in warm climates can push past 6 feet, in which case the Gardener's Blue Ribbon Ultomato with adjustable height to 6 feet is the better choice. For 80 percent of home garden indeterminate plantings, 5 feet is sufficient.

How does the powder coating compare to galvanized finish for rust resistance?+

Powder coating provides a thicker and more complete coverage than galvanized dipping, particularly at the cut ends of wire where galvanizing is thin. After one season in a wet climate, the VIVOSUN showed no rust on any above-ground surface. Leg tips below soil level showed the expected minor surface oxidation that all metal cages develop in soil contact.

Is there a 2-pack or 4-pack available?+

VIVOSUN sells this cage in individual units and in multi-packs. The per-unit cost drops slightly in multi-packs. If you are planting 4 or more indeterminate plants, check for the multi-pack pricing before ordering singles.
