I built my home gym in a 2-car garage during COVID. Four years later it has 80% of the equipment from my initial buying spree - 20% sold or given away because I never used it. Hereโs what I actually use, organized by budget tier.
Tier 1: Minimalist
For someone just starting or with limited space.
Bowflex SelectTech 552 Adjustable Dumbbells: Replace 15 pairs of dumbbells. 5-52.5 lb range covers most needs. The single most important purchase for home strength training.
Doorway Pull-Up Bar: Iron Gym or equivalent. Bodyweight pulling is essential and thereโs no good substitute.
Yoga Mat / Exercise Mat: For floor exercises, stretching, and core work.
Resistance Bands Set: For warm-up, mobility, and light resistance variations.
What this does: Full upper body strength training (chest press, rows, curls, overhead press), all bodyweight exercises, pull-ups, core work, mobility, and stretching. Total:.
Tier 2: Strength-Focused
Adds barbell work and dedicated squat capability.
Power Rack: Rep PR-1100, Titan T-3, or Force USA MyRack. Provides squat stands and safety arms for solo lifting.
Olympic Barbell: Rep Fitness 7ft Bar or Titan Performance Series. 7-foot 45-lb Olympic standard.
Plate Set: 300-400 lbs of cast iron or rubber-coated plates. Used plates from Facebook Marketplace often half the cost of new.
Adjustable Bench: Rep AB-3000 or Bowflex 5.1S. Flat, incline, and decline positions.
What this adds: Barbell squats, deadlifts, bench press, overhead press, rows, and most powerlifting/bodybuilding programs. Total:.
Tier 3: Complete Home Gym
Adds cardio and ancillary equipment.
Concept2 RowErg: The single best cardio machine for home gyms. Full-body workout, durability, low impact. Lifetime warranty on frame.
Pull-Up Bar Upgrade to wall-mounted Rogue Echo: Better than doorway bar for serious pulling.
Kettlebell Set: 25, 35, 50 lb kettlebells cover most needs. Rogue Kettlebells.
Dip Station / Parallettes: For dips, L-sits, push-ups.
Plyo Box: Fringe Sport 3-in-1 box for box jumps, step-ups, dips.
Flooring: Rubber stall mats from Tractor Supply atcurrent pricing - covers most home gyms for.
What this adds: Complete cardio capacity, varied movement patterns, dedicated floor surface, jump training. Total with previous tiers:.
Tier 4: Specialty (+)
For dedicated lifters or specific sport needs.
Olympic Bumper Plates: For dropping deadlifts and Olympic lifting. Cast iron plates damage floors and the barbell when dropped.
Adjustable Cable Machine: Force USA G6 or similar. Covers lat pulldowns, cable rows, triceps work thatโs hard to replicate with free weights.
Sled / Prowler: For conditioning work. Hard to use indoors - typically outdoor accessory.
Specialty Bars: Trap bar for deadlifts, safety squat bar for users with shoulder mobility issues, EZ-curl bar for arm work.
What I Never Used
Resistance Band Bar System: Boughtcurrent pricing system thinking it would replace dumbbells. Inadequate resistance for serious training. Sold within 6 months.
Vertical Leg Press: floor space hog. Squats are better for most users.
Smith Machine: Locked-in barbell path. Iโd rather have a power rack with free barbell. Sold mine.
Cheap Dumbbells from Amazon: Off-brand adjustable dumbbells with knob-tightening - they slip and feel unsafe. Spend the money on Bowflex SelectTech or PowerBlock.
Punching Bag: Used for 3 months then ignored. Unless youโre committed to martial arts training, expensive space-taker.
Stair Climber: Floor space hog with limited utility. Treadmill or rowing machine covers cardio better.
Setup Strategy
Start minimal and add gradually. Buy Tier 1 first. Use it consistently for 4-6 weeks. THEN evaluate whatโs missing for your specific goals before upgrading. Most people who buy Tier 4 from day one have closets full of unused equipment.
Used market is your friend. Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, Redditโs r/homegym have constant equipment turnover from people upgrading or moving. Power racks, barbells, and plates lose minimal value when used.
Floor and ceiling matter. Most damage to home gyms comes from dropped weights on bare concrete or floor joists. Rubber mats prevent floor damage. Ceiling height needs at least 8 feet for overhead pressing.
Programming
Equipment without a program is just decoration. Pick a tested program before equipment shopping:
- StrongLifts 5x5 - Free, beginner-friendly, barbell-focused
- PPL (Push Pull Legs) - Free Reddit-derived program
- Westside for Skinny Bastards - Athletic development
- 5/3/1 - Long-term strength program
Buy equipment to fit the program, not the other way around.

Frequently asked questions

Adjustable dumbbells, pull-up bar, and a yoga mat covers strength training basics. Total cost:. Combined with bodyweight movements (push-ups, squats, lunges), this handles most fitness goals.

Free weights for home gyms. Machines require more space, cost more, and lock you into specific movement patterns. Adjustable dumbbells plus a barbell + plates cover virtually all strength training movements.
Do I need a power rack?+

Concept2 or other cardio equipment?+
Cardio is the highest-value cardio purchase for most people. Full-body workout, low joint impact, scales to any fitness level. Concept2 RowErg is the standard atcurrent pricing. Treadmills and bikes are more expensive and single-purpose.
How much space do I need?+
Minimum: 6x8 feet for dumbbells + bench + floor work. Medium: 10x12 feet for power rack + barbell. Full: 12x15+ feet for everything. Ceiling height matters - 8 feet minimum for overhead pressing.
