Sony WH-1000XM5: still the best you can buy
The XM5 improves on the XM4 with a more refined ANC processor and a cleaner industrial design. The eight built-in microphones feed the QN1 processor, which analyzes and cancels noise in real time with minimal music coloration -- a persistent problem with cheaper ANC systems. Sound quality at high LDAC bitrates is genuinely impressive, with a wide soundstage and natural frequency balance that benefits all genres. The speak-to-chat feature, which pauses playback when you start talking, is so reliable it becomes invisible.

Sony WH-1000XM5: still the best you can buy

Bose QuietComfort 45: best for long comfort sessions
The Bose QC45 has the most comfortable headband of any over-ear earphone we compared, thanks to a dual-headband suspension system that distributes weight evenly. ANC is excellent if slightly behind the Sony in pure numbers. The Aware mode (ambient passthrough) is natural-sounding and safe for outdoor use. Sound is warmer and more mid-forward than the Sony, which some listeners prefer. At 24-hour battery life and the ability to fold fully flat, the QC45 is the better travel companion if the case space matters.
How to choose
ANC quality
True feedforward-feedback hybrid ANC systems outperform single-microphone implementations. The best systems cancel low-frequency drone without introducing white noise or music coloration.
Codec compatibility
Match to your source. iPhone users get the most from AAC; Android users benefit from LDAC or aptX Adaptive for higher-resolution streaming.
Comfort for long sessions
Memory foam ear cup padding and adjustable headbands determine whether a pair becomes unwearable after an hour. Try before buying when possible.
Battery life
ANC significantly drains battery. Look at ANC-on runtime, not maximum (ANC-off) rating, for realistic expectations during commutes and travel.
Controls and app
Quality earphones now offer companion apps with EQ, ANC intensity control, and firmware updates. A good app extends the useful life of a purchase.
Common questions
Earphones is a general term covering both over-ear headphones and in-ear models. Earbuds specifically refer to small in-ear units. In everyday use many people use the terms interchangeably.
Over-ear cordless earphones are generally too large and warm for intense exercise. True wireless earbuds with IPX4+ ratings are better suited for workouts.
Most Bluetooth 5.0+ headphones work reliably up to 30 feet in open space. Walls and interference reduce effective range.
With LDAC codec and a compatible source, quality is near-indistinguishable from wired at 320kbps. For true audiophile listening at home, wired still wins.
