EGO Power+ ME0800: the cleanest edge we found
The EGO ME0800 uses a 7.5-inch steel blade that slices through turf and soil rather than tearing. The seven depth positions give granular control from a light cleanup pass to a deep renovation cut for overgrown edges. Motor torque at 56V never bogged on compacted clay or thick sod roots. The blade change system requires no tools -- a quarter-turn lock releases the blade safely. Runtime on the 2.5Ah battery exceeded our 800-foot test route with 30% charge remaining.

Ryobi RYAC804 40V: best value pick
The Ryobi 40V edger is the right choice if you are already invested in the Ryobi 40V platform or working with a tighter budget. It produces good clean edges with its steel blade and three depth positions are sufficient for most homeowners. The motor is quieter than the EGO and the body is lighter, though it showed more hesitation on heavy clay sod. For typical suburban grass types on regular maintenance schedules, the Ryobi is excellent value.
What matters most
Blade type
Steel blades cut cleaner and last longer than plastic or alloy alternatives. Blade availability and cost should be checked before purchase.
Depth adjustment
Seven or more positions let you dial in the exact trench depth for clean lines without excessive soil removal.
Voltage
40V minimum for residential use. 56V or 80V for large yards, thick turf, or frequent use.
Weight and balance
A heavier machine that balances well over its wheels is more comfortable than a light but front-heavy model that strains your wrist.
Battery platform compatibility
Choosing an edger that shares batteries with your mower, blower, and trimmer reduces overall system cost dramatically.
Frequently asked
Modern 56V cordless edgers match gas edgers for most residential edging tasks. Gas still has an edge (no pun intended) for commercial use or extremely thick, overgrown borders.
A 2.5Ah 56V battery on the EGO edger edges approximately 1,000-1,200 linear feet on a single charge -- more than enough for most suburban yards.
A string trimmer can edge when turned 90 degrees, but a dedicated edger with a steel blade produces much cleaner, more precise lines with less effort.
Steel blades last 1-2 seasons depending on soil and debris contact. Sharpen when you notice ragged cuts or the motor working harder than usual.
