I have built more Intel i5 gaming PCs than I can count, and the motherboard is where most people either overspend or underspend. Drop on a top-end Z board for a non-K i5 and you have wasted real money on features you cannot use. Go too cheap on a B-board with weak VRMs and you will throttle under sustained load. The sweet spot is a to board with strong power delivery, modern connectivity, and good BIOS support.

MSI MAG B760 Tomahawk WiFi DDR5. Best Value
The Tomahawk B760 is MSI's mid-range hero. 12+1+1 phase VRM is plenty for any i5, DDR5 support to 7200 MT/s, WiFi 6E, and PCIe 5.0 on the primary slot. The board feels overbuilt for the price, and MSI's BIOS has improved dramatically in the last two generations. Best value pick.
Gigabyte Z790 Aorus Elite AX. Best for K-Series
If you are running a K-series i5 and want to push memory speeds, jump up to a Z790. The Aorus Elite AX has a 16+1+2 phase VRM with proper heatsinks, four M.2 slots, and DDR5 support to 7800 MT/s with one-click XMP. WiFi 6E and 2.5G ethernet round it out.
ASRock B760M Pro RS WiFi. Best Micro-ATX
For an mATX build, the ASRock B760M Pro RS is the sweet spot. 12-phase VRM is solid for an i5, the board layout is clean for small cases, and WiFi 6E and 2.5G LAN are standard. Three M.2 slots is generous for the form factor. Pairs perfectly with a compact case like the Lian Li A4-H2O.
MSI Pro Z790-A Max WiFi. Best Z790 Value
The MSI Pro Z790-A Max is the cheapest Z790 board I would trust with a K-series i5. 16+1+1 phase VRM with reasonable heatsinks, four M.2 slots, and full DDR5 memory overclocking support. Aesthetic is workstation-plain rather than gaming-flashy, but functionally it is excellent.
Common questions
For a non-K i5 you can save money with a B-series board. For a K-series chip with unlocked multiplier, the Z-series is worth it for memory overclocking and better VRMs.
Most current i5 gaming builds run 32GB DDR5-6000 paired with an 8 to 12GB graphics card. The motherboard rarely bottlenecks this combo.
