Echo PE-225 Gas Edger - Best Overall
The Echo PE-225 has a 21.2cc two-stroke engine, a solid steel drive shaft, and the cleanest cut line I have seen from a residential-grade edger. Echo's starter system is also genuinely easy to pull, which matters when you are doing four properties in a day.
Check price on Amazon →I maintain a half-acre yard and helped my neighbor edge his commercial property line all summer, so here are the five gas edgers that actually held up to real work.
I have been edging my own yard for 12 years and helped my neighbor with his side business doing weekly maintenance on three rental properties last summer. That meant hours behind gas edgers in every condition: dry crusty August soil, wet spring clay, and overgrown fall lawns that had not been touched in months. These five edgers are the ones that survived.
I compared for engine reliability, blade depth adjustment, vibration, and how clean the cut line looked after one pass.

Husqvarna 322L Gas Edger - Best for Commercial
The 322L is the edger I would buy if I edged for a living. 22.5cc engine, anti-vibration handle, and a heavy-duty gearbox that takes abuse. My neighbor put his through six months of three-properties-a-week use without a single failure.

Troy-Bilt TB539ES Gas Edger - Best Budget
The Troy-Bilt has the easiest electric start on the budget end. The 29cc four-cycle engine is heavier but you skip the oil-mix step which is nice for casual users. Cut quality is good for residential work, not great for thick edges.

Stihl FC 56 C-E Gas Edger - Best for Easy Starting
Stihl's Easy2Start system makes this the edger I recommend to anyone who hates pull-cords. The 27.2cc engine is responsive, the blade depth adjustment is the smoothest of the five, and Stihl dealer support means parts are never a problem.

Craftsman CMXGKAME30A Gas Edger - Best Entry Homeowner
The Craftsman is the cheapest gas edger I would honestly recommend. 30cc four-cycle engine, decent build, and Sears parts availability. Good fit for someone edging once or twice a month on a quarter-acre lot.
Frequently asked
For under a quarter acre with mostly soft soil edges, electric is fine. For thicker turf, hard packed dirt, or commercial work, gas still wins on torque and runtime. I run a gas edger for my main property.
Sharpen every 8 to 10 hours of use, replace every 30 to 40 hours or sooner if you hit concrete or rocks. A dull blade tears the grass and burns way more fuel.
