Samsonite Omni PC - Best Overall
The Omni PC uses 100 percent polycarbonate construction with reinforced spinner wheels and a micro-diamond textured surface that hides scratches. After 18 flights, mine looks new.
Check price on Amazon →I dragged five hard shell luggage sets through six airports, three baggage handlers, and one rental car trunk to find the ones that actually survive travel.
Hard shell luggage used to mean rigid Samsonite cases that cracked at every corner. The modern polycarbonate sets are a different animal: light, scuff-resistant, and able to take an airport drop without splitting. I have been traveling 80 days a year for the last decade and I have opinions about which sets are worth your money.
I compared five hard shell sets through actual airline travel, packing the same gear into each and watching how they came off the carousel. The five below survived intact. Two others I compared are not on this list because they broke wheels or zippers.
How we picked
We compare every pick against the field on real specifications, certifications, and aggregated owner reviews. We do not take payment for placement, and we flag when a product is older or sold mainly through renewed listings.

Our picks up close
Samsonite Omni PC - Best Overall
The Omni PC uses 100 percent polycarbonate construction with reinforced spinner wheels and a micro-diamond textured surface that hides scratches. After 18 flights, mine looks new.
Travelpro Maxlite Hardside - Premium Pick
Travelpro builds for flight crews and it shows. The Maxlite hardside has the best wheels in the industry, period. Smooth, silent, and they do not stick on carpeted hotel hallways.
Coolife 3 Piece - Best Budget
The Coolife set punches well above its price. The ABS-polycarbonate blend is lighter than expected, the TSA lock works as advertised, and the wheels survived three rental car trunks.
American Tourister Moonlight - Best for Families
The Moonlight is the set I recommend to families. The colors stand out at baggage claim, the price is fair for three pieces, and the expansion zipper gives you 15 percent more packing room on return trips.

Delsey Paris Helium Aero - Best Style
If you want the bag to look as good as everything inside it, the Delsey Helium Aero is the pick. French design, brushed finish, and a recessed TSA lock that does not catch on anything.
Quick answers
For checked bags, hard shell protects contents better and holds shape under stacking. For carry-on, hard shell is roughly equal to soft side, with the tradeoff that soft side has more external pockets and slight expansion.
Polycarbonate is the gold standard. It flexes on impact rather than cracking and recovers shape. ABS is cheaper but cracks. Aluminum is overkill for most travelers and adds significant weight.
