Why we tested the Fellow Ode Gen 2

The original Ode had a loyal following but two known weaknesses, retention and the inability to grind for finer filter recipes. Fellow rebuilt the Gen 2 around larger flat burrs and a new chute, and we wanted to see whether it justifies the price hike.

What we liked

Cup clarity is the headline story. Side by side with a Baratza Virtuoso Plus on the same beans and recipe, the Ode pulled more sweetness and a cleaner finish. The single dial is intuitive and the magnetic catch cup is genuinely satisfying.

What could be better

If you also pull espresso, you still need a second grinder. The hopper is intentionally small, which is a feature for fresh single dosing but a chore if you prefer to load a week of beans at once.

Value

At $345 the Fellow Ode Brew Grinder Gen 2 is the right Home & Kitchen in 2026.

Fellow Ode Brew Grinder Gen 2 vs. the competition

Product Verdict
Baratza Encore Alternative - Half the price but conical burrs deliver less cup clarity.
Baratza Virtuoso Plus Alternative - Cheaper with digital timer, slightly muddier on light roasts.
Wilfa Svart Aroma Skip - Older burr design, retention is high and noisy.
Niche Zero Upgrade - 63mm conical burrs handle espresso too, but costs more and ships slowly.

โ˜… FINAL VERDICT

Should you buy the Fellow Ode Brew Grinder Gen 2?

The Fellow Ode Gen 2 finally delivers what the original promised. The new 64mm flat burrs give cups a clarity we have only previously tasted from commercial grinders, and retention has dropped to almost nothing thanks to the redesigned exit chute. It is the grinder we now reach for every morning, and after five months of daily use it shows no drift in calibration. If you brew filter coffee daily and care about the cup, the Ode Gen 2 is the easiest recommendation in its price bracket.

Frequently asked questions

Can the Ode Gen 2 do espresso?+

No. Fellow tuned it specifically for filter brews. Pulling espresso is not within its setting range.

How much retention should I expect?+

Under one gram per dose after the first few grinds. The new chute geometry made the biggest difference here.

Does it work for single dosing?+

Yes, the hopper holds about 100g and the grinder is designed for weighing in single doses.
