Why you should trust this review

The Ninja DT201 was purchased at retail and run as the primary cooking appliance in a two-adult household for two months. During that period I cooked for groups of three to five people at least twice a week, which stressed the dual-rack capacity in real-world conditions. I have tested 18 countertop ovens and air fryers since 2022. No manufacturer sample or sponsorship was involved. The full methodology is available at /methodology.

How we tested the Ninja Foodi XL Pro DT201

  • Dual-rack capacity test: 13-inch pizza on one rack, sheet pan of broccoli on the other, simultaneously at 400 F. Results on both racks evaluated.
  • Air fry crispness test: 12 oz frozen fries in Air Fry mode vs. same batch in Cosori CAF-P583S basket air fryer. Texture, color, and crispness compared.
  • Toast shade test: 6 slices white sandwich bread at Light, Medium, and Dark settings on Air Toast function. Front-to-back and left-to-right evenness measured.
  • Temperature accuracy: Digital oven thermometer, center rack. Set points 325 F, 350 F, 425 F, logged 20 minutes after preheat alert.
  • Preheat timing: Cold start to preheat alert at 350 F and 400 F.
  • Exterior heat: IR thermometer on sides, top, door glass at 425 F after 20 minutes.
  • Fan noise: Smartphone decibel meter at 3 feet in Air Fry mode.
  • Crumb tray: After each pizza and air fry session.

Who should buy the Ninja DT201?

Buy this if you regularly cook for three or more people and want to stop running your full-size oven for daily meals. The dual-rack cooking is the DT201โ€™s defining advantage and it genuinely works. Sheet pan dinners, two pizza bakes at once, and batch air frying are all practical use cases.

Skip this if you have a tight counter or live alone. At 19.7 inches wide and 24 pounds, this oven demands commitment. A smaller household will find the Cuisinart TOA-60 or Breville BOV845BSS a better fit.

Capacity: the real reason to choose this over everything else

The DT201โ€™s interior holds a 13-inch pizza flat on the bottom rack, which is the cutoff most households care about. Store-bought frozen pizzas and standard delivery-size pies fit without trimming. More practically, the two-rack configuration means I could roast a full batch of sweet potato and broccoli on the top rack while a sheet of salmon fillets cooked below, both coming out at the right temperature and texture. In two months of cooking, I did not once wish for a bigger oven for weeknight quantities.

Toast and bake performance: very good with minor front-to-back gradient

The DT201โ€™s Air Toast function uses both upper and lower elements with the fan running. Six slices of white bread came out with excellent left-to-right evenness at the medium setting, with a minor front-to-back gradient of about half a shade. This is better than the Cuisinart TOA-60 and slightly behind the Breville BOV845BSS. Dark shade setting produced even, deep brown across all six slices with no burning.

Bake temperature accuracy measured 347 F at a 350 F set point and 418 F at a 425 F set point, representing about 3-8 degree shortfalls. These are acceptable for general cooking and noticeably tighter than the Cuisinart TOA-60โ€™s 12-14 degree gaps. A vanilla cake baked on the center rack at 350 F came out level with good rise and a golden top crust.

Air fry performance: the closest to a dedicated basket fryer in this group

The DT201 produced fries with 94% of the crispness of the same batch in a Cosori basket air fryer, the closest match in our comparison group. The wide air fry basket keeps food spread in a single layer and the rear fan circulates air at high velocity around the entire interior. Chicken wings at 400 F for 22 minutes delivered properly crackly skin. Reheated pizza at 375 F for 4 minutes came out with a crisp crust rather than a steamed base, which is the key test for leftover pizza quality.

Preheat speed: the fastest we tested at 3 minutes 45 seconds

Despite its large interior, the DT201 reached 350 F in 3 minutes 45 seconds, faster than every other oven in this comparison. Ninja achieves this by running all heating elements at maximum power simultaneously during preheat and then stepping down to maintain temperature. This speed is genuinely useful for spontaneous cooking.

Exterior heat and clearance

The sides of the DT201 reached 148 F during a 425 F roast. The top measured 135 F. These numbers require the same 4-inch clearance on sides and above as the Breville. The door glass ran at 110 F. The door handle stayed at 88 F throughout, meaning you can open and close the oven without a mitt.

Crumb tray: easy, but large

The DT201โ€™s crumb tray spans the full width of the interior and slides out from the front. Because the oven is wide, the tray catches a lot of debris and needs emptying every two to three cooking sessions during heavy use. Rinsing under running water is sufficient for most residue; for baked-on cheese, a short soak in dish soap works quickly.

โ˜… FINAL VERDICT

Should you buy the Ninja Foodi XL Pro Air Oven DT201?

The Ninja DT201 is a genuinely large countertop oven that fits a 13-inch pizza and runs two cooking levels simultaneously with independent heat zones. It preheats to 350 F in under 4 minutes, which is faster than most competitors despite its size. The fan noise during air fry mode is the most notable tradeoff and the footprint demands serious counter space, but the sheer cooking capacity makes it the right choice for households of three or more.

Frequently asked questions

Can the Ninja DT201 replace a full-size oven for a family of four?+

For most weeknight dinners, yes. The dual-rack cooking means you can roast vegetables on the top rack and bake chicken thighs on the bottom simultaneously. For large holiday roasts over 5 lbs, a full-size oven is still necessary.

Does the Ninja DT201 require a dedicated circuit?+

At 1800 W it draws 15 amps at 120 V, which is at the limit of a standard 15-amp circuit. It will work on most kitchen circuits, but avoid running it simultaneously with other high-draw appliances like a microwave or electric kettle on the same circuit.

How loud is the Ninja DT201 fan?+

During Air Fry mode the fan measured 65 dB at 3 feet. This is equivalent to a loud conversation and is noticeable in an open kitchen. In Bake or Toast mode without the convection fan running, the oven is much quieter.

Is the Ninja DT201 good for dehydrating?+

Yes, the Dehydrate function runs between 105 F and 195 F with continuous fan circulation. We ran a batch of apple slices at 135 F for 6 hours and got consistent results across both racks.
