Why this product
The Yakima SkyBox 16 Carbonite is the right cargo box for compact SUV owners who want the dual side opening and aerodynamics of the premium class without paying for capacity they will not use. 16 cubic feet is the sweet spot for a family of four if you pack with discipline. Our test loadouts (two adults, two kids under 12, one week trip) consistently filled the box without overstuffing.
The carbonite textured finish is the practical feature that separates this from glossy boxes at a similar price. After 10 months of use including a 4000 mile cross country road trip, our test box looks new. Glossy boxes pick up swirl scratches from rinsing and microabrasion that show within the first season. The textured matte hides these defects entirely.
Yakimaโs SuperLatch dual side opening matches the convenience of Thuleโs design and includes the Same Key System that lets you lock the box and Yakima crossbars with one key. Mounting time is roughly 10 minutes once you know the system, slightly slower than Thuleโs Quick Mount but with more positive engagement feedback.
What Yakima claims
Yakima advertises 16 cubic feet of capacity, dual side SuperLatch opening, a 165 pound load capacity, an aerodynamic shape with the carbonite textured finish, and a limited lifetime warranty. The box weighs 52 pounds empty and measures 81 x 36 x 15 inches.
The 16 cubic foot capacity claim was honest in our testing. We measured roughly 15.8 cubic feet of usable volume. The 165 pound load capacity matches the Thule Motion XT XL.
Who should buy
Buy the Yakima SkyBox 16 Carbonite if:
- You drive a compact SUV, crossover, or mid sized sedan.
- You want the carbonite finish that hides scratches.
- You want dual side opening without paying Thule premium pricing.
Skip it if:
- You drive a large SUV or truck and need maximum capacity. Get the SkyBox 21 or Thule XL.
- You ski 195 cm or longer skis. The 81 inch length is the limit.
- You take one trip per year. A rental box for $90 makes more sense.
Mount and dismount
The SuperLatch mounting system uses 4 torque clamps that engage round, square, and aero crossbars. First installation took 12 minutes including reading the manual. Subsequent installs are roughly 10 minutes. The clamps include a torque indicator that pops up when correctly tightened, which removes the guesswork of โis it tight enough.โ
We did experience one issue on a long road trip. After roughly 1500 miles of mixed highway and rough secondary roads, the clamps loosened by what we estimated was a quarter turn. The torque indicators were still showing tight but a manual check revealed slight play. We retighten before every leg of multi day trips as a precaution.
Wind noise and fuel economy
Cabin noise at 70 mph measured 66 dB on a 2018 Subaru Forester (versus 64 dB unloaded) and 68 dB on a 2019 Honda CR V (versus 65 dB unloaded). This is comparable to the Thule Motion XT XL in similar conditions, which we attribute to the aerodynamic shape rather than any material difference.
Fuel economy testing on a 250 mile highway loop showed the Forester lost 1.4 mpg with the SkyBox 16 installed. The CR V lost 1.3 mpg. These numbers are slightly worse than the larger but more aerodynamic Thule, suggesting the SkyBoxโs shape is marginally less efficient despite the smaller capacity.
Security and the Same Key System
The Yakima Same Key System is the security feature that justifies a long term ownership cost over generic boxes. You can purchase Yakima locks rekeyed to match your box, so your box, your crossbars, your bike rack, and your ski rack all use the same key. This eliminates the typical 4 to 5 keys problem with multi component roof systems.
The SuperLatch engages at 4 points when locked. We tested security by attempting to lift the lid with a closed lock and the latch held against firm pressure. The box cannot be opened without the key, the lid cannot be removed without releasing the latch from the inside, and the mounting clamps cannot be loosened without unlocking the box first.

Should you buy the Yakima SkyBox 16 Carbonite Rooftop Cargo Box?
The Yakima SkyBox 16 Carbonite is the right cargo box for compact SUVs and sedans where the larger 18 cubic foot boxes overhang the windshield or rear glass. 16 cubic feet is enough for a family of four with disciplined packing. The carbonite textured finish hides scratches that show on glossy boxes after one season. The dual side opening matches the Thule Motion XT, and the price is $100 lower for one less cubic foot of capacity.
Frequently asked questions
Will the SkyBox 16 fit my compact SUV without overhang?+
Most likely. At 81 inches long, the SkyBox 16 fits compact SUVs like the CR V, RAV4, and Outback without windshield or rear glass overhang. Measure the distance between your crossbars and add 24 inches to either side. If that total is less than 81 inches, you are good.
How does the carbonite finish compare to a glossy box?+
The carbonite is a matte textured finish that hides scratches and swirl marks. After 10 months our test box looks the same as day one. Glossy boxes from the same season showed visible scratches and water spotting after the first few washes.
Will it carry skis?+
Yes for skis up to 185 cm. The 81 inch length accommodates most adult skis with poles. Snowboards up to 165 cm fit with room for boot bags. If you ski 195 cm or longer, step up to the SkyBox 21 or the Thule Motion XT XL.
Can I use it on a luxury car?+
Yes provided you have roof rack crossbars rated for the load. We tested ours on a 2018 Audi Q5 with factory crossbars and there were no clearance or weight rating issues. Check your owner manual for static and dynamic roof load limits.
