Standard tipping in 2026 (US)

• Restaurants (sit-down): 18-22% standard, 25%+ for outstanding service.
• Counter / takeout / coffee: 0-15% (tipping creep is real — pre-tax is fine).
• Delivery (food): 15-20%, $5 minimum.
• Ride share (Uber/Lyft): 15-20% in-app.
• Hotel housekeeping: $2-5 per night, daily (not at checkout).
• Bartender: $1-2 per drink, or 18-20% on tab.
• Hair stylist / massage: 18-22%.

Tipping on tax

Industry standard is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, not the post-tax total. In states with 8-10% sales tax, tipping on the post-tax amount adds an effective extra 1.6-2% — small but worth knowing if you're frequenting the same restaurants.

Group dining tips

• Restaurants often auto-add 18-20% gratuity for groups of 6 or more. Check the bill before adding more.
• When splitting unevenly (one person had wine, others didn't), some apps like Splitwise track item-level shares better than a flat split.
• For business dinners, the host typically tips on the full bill — adding tip and signing the receipt without splitting in front of guests.
