Pick the right TV size for your room based on how far you sit, using SMPTE (recommended) and THX (immersive) viewing-angle standards.
There are two competing standards for ideal TV size by viewing distance:
SMPTE is conservative — comfortable for long viewing sessions. THX is more immersive but can feel overwhelming for casual TV. Most home users land between the two. For a 10-foot viewing distance: SMPTE recommends a 75" TV, THX recommends a 100" TV. This calculator uses the SMPTE standard by default.
Old "minimum viewing distance" charts assumed 1080p resolution — sit too close and you'd see pixels. With 4K and 8K, you can sit much closer without artifacts. Bigger TVs at the same distance now look better, not worse.
For a 65-75" living room TV viewed from 8-12 feet, QLED Mini-LED offers the best price-per-inch. OLED is worth the premium below 65" or for darkened rooms.
Optimal TV center height = eye level when seated, typically 42 inches from the floor. Mount the CENTER of the screen at eye level — not the top, not the bottom. Bedroom TVs can mount slightly higher (since you're lying back), but never tilt down more than 15° to avoid neck strain.
