Why you should trust this review

We tested seven mattress toppers for eight weeks each on an all-foam mattress (our baseline hot sleeping mattress). Our four-person test panel of hot sleepers measured skin microclimate temperature nightly and reported subjective comfort and temperature sensation at morning wake. We compared each topper against a control condition (same mattress without topper) and against each other.

How we tested cooling bed toppers

Temperature measurement used a calibrated sensor at the torso-topper interface, averaging readings from 10pm to 6am. We also assessed how much each topper changed the underlying mattressโ€™s feel (motion isolation, pressure relief, surface conformity) and whether it introduced any discomfort through off-gassing or initial firmness mismatch.

All toppers were tested with identical percale cotton sheets to isolate topper performance.

Who should buy a cooling bed topper?

Hot sleepers who own a mattress that sleeps warm (typically memory foam or dense foam) but do not want to replace the entire mattress. A cooling topper is a significantly cheaper intervention than mattress replacement and can dramatically improve sleep quality for hot sleepers. It is also valuable for couples where one partner sleeps warm and wants cooling without replacing a mattress the other partner is comfortable on.

Saatva Graphite Memory Foam Topper: Best cooling bed topper

The Saatva Graphite topper reduced our test panelโ€™s average sleep microclimate temperature by 2.2 degrees F compared to the bare foam mattress baseline โ€” the best result of any foam-based topper in our test. The graphite infusion works by conducting heat away from the body through the topper rather than allowing it to build up at the sleep surface. The open-cell foam structure allows more air movement than standard closed-cell memory foam.

The 3-inch depth significantly improved the comfort of our test mattress without introducing the heat-trapping that 3-inch standard memory foam creates. The ventilated knit cover added additional surface breathability.

The 45-night trial is shorter than some competitors but adequate to make an informed decision about long-term suitability.

Latex for Less Natural Latex Topper: Best latex cooling topper

Natural latex is the coolest topper material overall due to its open-cell structure that allows continuous airflow throughout the topperโ€™s depth. In our tests, it reduced sleep microclimate temperature by 2.6 degrees F vs. the foam baseline โ€” the best result in our field. The bouncy, pressure-relieving feel of latex is also preferred by many sleepers over the slow-recovery feel of foam.

The Latex for Less Natural Latex Topper uses Dunlop-process latex with a 7-zone pressure relief design. It is available in three firmness options, which allows better matching to your existing mattress firmness.

What to look for in a cooling bed topper

Material: Natural latex is coolest. Graphite, copper, and gel-infused foams are next. Standard viscoelastic memory foam is the warmest โ€” avoid it if cooling is your priority.

Thickness: 2-3 inches provides the best balance of cooling and comfort. 1-inch toppers provide minimal comfort improvement. 4-inch toppers trap more heat.

Cover material: A ventilated or mesh cover significantly improves surface airflow. Quilted cotton covers are better than polyester covers.

Trial period: Most premium toppers offer 30-60 night trials. This is valuable because topper performance takes a few weeks to fully assess.

Weight and handling: Mattress toppers are awkward to move and reposition. Consider this if you frequently rotate your mattress.

Frequently asked questions

Can a cooling topper fix a hot mattress?+

Partially. A cooling topper reduces heat at the body-sleep-surface interface but does not change the mattress's core temperature management. If your mattress traps significant heat, a topper helps but does not fully compensate.

What type of topper is coolest?+

Natural latex toppers sleep coolest due to an open-cell structure that allows continuous airflow. Graphite and copper-infused foams are the next best. Standard viscoelastic memory foam (Tempur-Pedic) sleeps hottest.

How thick should a cooling topper be?+

2-3 inches is optimal for most sleepers. Thicker toppers provide more comfort but also more material to trap heat. Thinner toppers (1-inch) provide minimal comfort benefit for most body types.

Do I need a specific sheet type with a cooling topper?+

Yes. Using microfiber or polyester sheets over a cooling topper negates much of the cooling benefit. Use percale cotton, linen, or eucalyptus sheets to maximize the cooling effect.
