I have been growing tomato and pepper starts under lights every spring for almost a decade, and I compared five popular LED veg lights side by side this season across two seedling shelves.

What Matters Most

I judge a veg light on PAR output at the canopy, even coverage across a tray, heat output near the lights, dimmer and timer quality, and how the actual plants look after three weeks.

My Setup

I split a 4x4 grow tent into quadrants and rotated each light across two trays of pepper starts and one tray of basil microgreens. Same temperature, same watering, same soil mix every time.

The LED Veg Lights I Tested

The Spider Farmer SF1000 LED Grow Light was my top pick because the Samsung LM301B diodes produced the stockiest seedlings and the dimmer is smooth.

The Mars Hydro TS 1000 Grow Light is the best value. Coverage was nearly identical to the Spider Farmer at a lower price.

The VIPARSPECTRA P1000 LED Grow Light ran the coolest. My tray temperatures stayed within two degrees of ambient even after eight hours on.

The Barrina T5 LED Grow Light Strips is the best shelf solution. I linked four strips end to end for a long microgreens shelf and the even coverage was perfect.

The Sansi 24W Grow Light Bulb is my pick for a single plant or a single shelf. Screws into any lamp and surprised me with how dense the basil grew.

Common Mistakes

The biggest mistake I see is running the light too close at full power on day one. That bleaches cotyledons fast. Start dim and high, then ramp up. Second mistake is running 24 hours of light. Plants need dark cycles to grow well, so I run 16 on and 8 off.

Final Recommendation

For a real grow tent the Spider Farmer SF1000 is what I would buy again. For a shelf of microgreens or seedling trays, link Barrina T5 strips. They cost less and cover more.

Frequently asked questions

How far above seedlings should a veg LED sit?+

I start mine 24 inches above the canopy and lower it to around 18 inches once true leaves appear. Too close and you get bleached tips no matter how good the light is.

Are full spectrum lights better than blue-only veg lights?+

For veg only growth I prefer full spectrum because plants are stockier and transition to flower without shock. Pure blue can leave you with leggy, weak stems.
