I have a whole house audio setup with eight pairs of speakers across living rooms, bedrooms, and a deck. I compared five multi-speaker switches over six weeks of daily use across two different amps.

What Matters Most

I focused on signal quality with no audible loss, impedance matching protection, build quality of the binding posts, terminal types and ease of wiring, and number of zones supported.

My Setup

A Yamaha A-S301 integrated amp and a Marantz NR1510 receiver, both wired through each switch into eight pairs of in-wall and bookshelf speakers. Same content, same volume, blind switching tests.

The Multiple Speaker Switches I Tested

The Niles SPS-6 6-Pair Speaker Selector was my top pick because the impedance matching is genuinely effective and the build quality is the best in the category.

The OSD Audio ATM7 Speaker Selector is the best value. Seven zones with impedance protection at half the price of the Niles.

The Monoprice 6-Channel Speaker Selector is the budget pick. No impedance matching, but for two zones at a time it is a great cheap solution.

The TIC Corporation SS6 Speaker Selector has individual volume controls per zone. That alone is worth the upgrade if you have rooms at different listening levels.

The Russound SMS3 Speaker Selector is the most premium. Three zone selector with banana plug terminals and audiophile grade internals.

Common Mistakes

The biggest mistake is running four or six pairs of speakers off a single amp without impedance matching. You will smoke the ampโ€™s output stage. Either use a switch with protection or only play one or two zones at a time. Second mistake is using thin speaker wire on long runs. For zones over 50 feet from the switch use 14 gauge minimum.

Final Recommendation

For serious whole house audio the Niles SPS-6 is the one I would buy. Built to last and impedance matching just works. The OSD Audio ATM7 is the better value if you want similar features for less money.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need impedance matching on a speaker switch?+

If you run more than two pairs of speakers at the same time off one amp, yes. Without impedance protection you can drop the load below your amp's safe range and kill it.

Can I use a speaker switch with my AV receiver?+

Yes, but only with the front main speaker outs. Do not run a speaker switch off your amplified surround channels because they are not designed for high impedance loads.
