It is strongly recommended to keep wheel brushes and interior brushes completely separate. Wheel brushes collect brake dust, iron particles, and road tar that are nearly impossible to fully rinse out of bristles. Using a contaminated brush on dashboard trim or touchscreens risks scratching or staining delicate surfaces. Colour-coded kits make this separation easy to maintain.

Rinse brushes thoroughly under running water immediately after use to prevent cleaning product from drying in the bristles. For brushes used with degreasers or iron removers, a secondary rinse with a small amount of car shampoo helps neutralize residual chemicals. Lay brushes flat or hang them bristle-down to dry so water does not pool in the handle ferrule and cause loosening or rusting. Avoid submerging wooden handles for extended periods.

For painted trim, soft-touch plastics, and touchscreens, boar hair or high-quality ultra-soft synthetic brushes are meaningfully safer than standard nylon because the finer, softer individual fibers distribute contact pressure across more points and reduce the chance of micro-scratches. For wheel cleaning or engine bays, synthetic nylon is typically preferred because it is more durable under abrasive conditions and tolerates harsh chemicals better than natural fibers.

A practical starter setup requires a minimum of four brushes: one long-reach wheel barrel brush, one medium stiffness brush for wheel faces and door jambs, one small soft brush for interior vents and button gaps, and one general interior brush for larger dash surfaces.
