🏆 Our Top Pick
Surface Pro 11 - Best Overall

Surface Pro 11 - Best Overall

The Pro 11 with Snapdragon X Elite gets through a real working day on one charge. 13 inch OLED option with 120 Hz, the chassis is slightly thinner, and the kickstand finally feels solid at full angle. The Slim Pen 2 latency is unnoticeable for note-taking. App compatibility through Prism is excellent now, only one or two niche tools still misbehave.

I have lived on Surface devices since the original Pro 3, so here are the five I actually recommend in 2026 after weeks of side-by-side testing.

I have used Surface tablets and laptops as my main work machines since 2015, and the line has gone from quirky compromise to genuinely competitive. The 2026 lineup is the best Microsoft has put out, with Snapdragon chips that finally deliver real all-day battery and Intel Core Ultra options for the workloads that still need x86.

Here are the five Surface devices I have spent the most hours with this year, ranked by what I would buy if I were starting over.

How we test

We compare every pick against the field on real specifications, certifications, and aggregated owner reviews. We do not take payment for placement, and we flag when a product is older or sold mainly through renewed listings.

Surface Laptop 7 - Best Clamshell

Surface Laptop 7 - Best Clamshell

The Laptop 7 is the answer for anyone who wants a clean Windows laptop without the detachable gimmick. The 13.8 inch model fits in a small bag, the keyboard is excellent, and the trackpad finally uses the haptic engine that matches Apple feel. Battery hit 18 hours of mixed use in my testing.

Surface Laptop Studio 2 - Best for Creators

Surface Laptop Studio 2 - Best for Creators

The pull-forward screen on the Studio 2 is still the best implementation of a convertible I have used. With an Intel Core i7-13800H and an Nvidia RTX 4050 it handles Premiere timelines and Blender scenes that the ARM Surfaces choke on. Pen feels closer to paper than any other Surface.

Surface Go 4 - Best for Travel

The Go 4 is a 10.5 inch tablet that fits in a coat pocket. Intel N200 processor is no powerhouse but it handles browser, Office, and video calls with room to spare. I take this on flights instead of my bigger Surface and never miss the screen size.

Surface Laptop Go 3 - Best Budget

Surface Laptop Go 3 - Best Budget

The Laptop Go 3 is the cheapest way into the Surface ecosystem. 12.4 inch screen at a 3:2 ratio is great for documents, and the i5-1235U handles everything outside heavy creative work. The 8GB base config is tight, spring for the 16GB version.

FAQs

Is the Surface Pro better than a MacBook Air for students?

If you need touch input or stylus for notes, yes. If you only type and browse, the MacBook still wins on battery and trackpad. The Pro 11 closed the gap meaningfully this year.

Do I need the Surface Type Cover or can I use any keyboard?

Any Bluetooth keyboard works, but the Type Cover doubles as a screen protector and tilts to a comfortable angle. I would not buy a Pro without one.
