I love the look of a real flame on a patio, but I do not love refilling oil reservoirs, smelling kerosene smoke, or watching wind blow citronella oil onto the decking. After two summers of that nonsense I switched to propane, and our backyard finally looks the way I wanted from the beginning.

Most are rated for outdoor use and survive normal weather, but I cover the burner heads in winter and remove the tank before storms. Water in the gas valve is the main failure point.
