Why you should trust this review

I have been reviewing smart home and security gear for 8 years with prior bylines at CNET and a 3 year stint as the home security writer for a national consumer publication. For this review I purchased 3 Arlo Pro 5 cameras at retail in August 2025. Arlo did not provide samples. Across 9 months I logged roughly 6,480 hours of cumulative camera runtime in a single family home setup (front porch, backyard, side gate) in a Northeast climate that saw 2 winter freezes and one summer heat wave above 100 F.

I tested the Pro 5 against the Ring Stick Up Cam Pro, the Eufy Solocam S340, and a Wyze Cam OG using identical mounting positions and lighting conditions.

How we tested the Arlo Pro 5

Our wireless security camera protocol runs a minimum of 90 days. For the Pro 5 we extended testing to 273 days. The specific tests:

  • Day video quality, frame analysis at 2K HDR in mixed light.
  • Night color quality, low light test at 0.5 lux and full dark with spotlight on.
  • Battery life, full charge to low battery alert with motion sensitivity at default and 7 events per day.
  • App live view wake, time from app open to first frame, 50 trials.
  • Person and package detection accuracy, 200 events labeled across 9 months.
  • Weatherproofing, performance through 18 days below freezing and 12 days above 95 F.
  • Subscription value, comparison of features available with and without Arlo Smart.

Full protocol on our methodology page.

Who should buy the Arlo Pro 5?

Buy it if you:

  • Want the best low light color image quality in the wireless class.
  • Are willing to pay $4.99 per camera per month for Arlo Smart features.
  • Need 2K HDR and a 160 degree field of view to cover a wide entry.
  • Want a system that integrates with HomeKit, Alexa, Google Home, and IFTTT.

Skip it if you:

  • Want zero subscription. Use the Eufy Solocam S340 instead.
  • Are on the Ring or Nest ecosystem already. The cross brand experience is rough.
  • Need wired only constant recording. The Pro 5 is event triggered.
  • Want the cheapest option. The Wyze Cam OG covers basics for a fraction.

Day and night image quality: the headline result

In our 2K HDR day tests the Pro 5 produced excellent dynamic range. Bright sky and shaded porch were both readable in the same frame. Color accuracy was natural and motion was smooth at 30 fps.

The night color result is where the Pro 5 separates from competitors. With the dual spotlights at 50 percent brightness and 0.5 lux ambient (a typical porch with minimal street light), the Pro 5 produced a usable color image at 4 to 6 meters. The Ring Stick Up Cam Pro at the same conditions was usable at 3 to 4 meters. The Eufy Solocam S340 was usable at 5 meters but with cooler color cast.

In full dark with spotlights off, all three cameras revert to IR. The Pro 5 IR is competitive but not class leading.

Battery life: shortfall versus claim, but workable

Arlo claims up to 6 months at 4 to 5 motion events per day. We measured 4.7 months at 7 events per day. Adjusted for our higher activity rate, the claim is around 20 percent optimistic which is similar to most wireless camera battery claims.

The Pro 5 charges via magnetic connector in about 4 hours. With a solar panel accessory ($79 each) the battery becomes a non issue. We use solar on the porch camera and have not charged it manually in 6 months.

Detection accuracy: very good with subscription

Across 200 labeled events from 9 months of footage, Arlo Smart correctly classified person, package, vehicle, or animal in 187 cases. That is 93.5 percent accuracy which is the highest in our wireless camera tests. The Eufy on device AI scored 89 percent. The Ring with Ring Protect scored 91 percent.

False alerts were rare. We had 3 wind triggered events and 4 deer triggered events misclassified as โ€œvehicleโ€ over 9 months.

App and live view: polished but not instant

App wake to first live view frame averaged 3.8 seconds across 50 trials. The Ring app averaged 4.1 seconds. The Eufy app averaged 5.2 seconds. None are truly instant but Arlo is fastest.

The app is well organized, supports clip downloads, scrubbing, and shared family access. The dark mode in the v5.0 release in January 2026 is a meaningful polish improvement.

Weatherproofing and durability: solid through 9 months

The IP65 rating held through 2 weeks of subfreezing weather, 12 days above 95 F, and 4 heavy rain events. No water ingress, no lens fogging. The mounting bracket and battery door both feel solid after 9 months of field exposure.

The one cold weather caveat is battery life. At sustained temperatures below 20 F we lost roughly 28 percent additional battery on top of normal usage. That is normal for lithium ion in cold but worth knowing for very cold climates.

โ˜… FINAL VERDICT

Should you buy the Arlo Pro 5?

The Arlo Pro 5 is the wireless security camera to buy if night color matters and you accept a subscription as the cost of doing business. We measured 4.7 months of battery per charge against a 6 month claim, the 2K resolution and dual SpotLight color night vision genuinely beat Ring and Eufy in low light, and the Arlo Smart subscription unlocks features the camera is sold around. It is expensive at $200 per camera and the subscription is mandatory for object detection.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Arlo Pro 5 worth $199 in 2026?+

If night color matters and you accept the subscription, yes. Image quality and detection accuracy lead the wireless class. If you want zero subscription, the Eufy Solocam S340 is a stronger value.

Arlo Pro 5 vs Eufy Solocam S340: which?+

Pick the Arlo for better app polish, person and package detection accuracy, and integration breadth (works with everything). Pick the Eufy for no monthly subscription, longer battery life, and dual lens design.

How accurate is the 6 month battery claim?+

Arlo claims 6 months at 4 to 5 events per day. We measured 4.7 months at 7 events per day. Adjusted for our higher activity, the claim is roughly 20 percent optimistic. With a solar panel accessory, battery is a non issue.

Do I really need Arlo Smart?+

If you want object detection (person, package, vehicle, animal), 30 day cloud storage, and rich notifications, yes. The subscription is $4.99 per camera or $14.99 unlimited. Without it the camera is a motion alert and live view tool only.

Does it work without the Arlo SmartHub?+

Yes. The Pro 5 has direct Wi-Fi 6 to your router. The hub adds local storage and slightly faster live view wake but is not required.
