Why the BL5402 stands out
Citizen has been making Eco-Drive watches for decades, and the BL5402-09E feels like the brand at full stride. The combination of solar quartz, perpetual calendar, chronograph and power reserve in one $295 watch is rare. It also looks like a more expensive piece thanks to the black sunray dial, applied gold-tone hour markers and bevelled lugs.
What we tested
Ten months of daily wear in office and travel settings, plus a four-day drawer rest to test the power reserve. We logged time drift against an atomic clock app weekly, measured the chronograph reset accuracy and tested the perpetual calendar by manually advancing through three month-end rollovers including a leap day simulation.
Build quality and case
The case is brushed steel with polished sides and weighs a sensible 100 grams on the leather strap. Lume on the hands is modest but legible at the nightstand. The pushers actuate the chronograph cleanly, though the haptic feel is softer than a $500 piece. Crystal scratch resistance was excellent through ten months of normal desk work.
Movement and accuracy
The Eco-Drive E650 module is among Citizen’s best calibers. Solar charging fully topped up the watch in three days of office light. Daily drift averaged near +0.3 seconds, which is exceptional. The perpetual calendar correctly handled end-of-month transitions every time during testing.
Comfort on the wrist
The 43mm case and 22mm lugs sit cleanly on wrists between 6.5 and 8 inches. The included leather strap is fine but stiff. We swapped it for a soft Italian calf strap after month two and the watch felt even better. Total wear weight on the leather strap came in at 100 grams.
Display and legibility
The dial is busy by design with three subdials, a 24-hour indicator and the perpetual calendar window. Despite the density, contrast is good and the AR coating on the mineral crystal cuts glare in office lighting. Reading time at a glance is easy because the hour and minute hands are clearly the dominant feature.
Who should buy it
Anyone who wants one dress chronograph for work, travel and special occasions without paying Swiss money. Solar power means there is no battery service to schedule, and the perpetual calendar means you never adjust the date. This is a true set-and-forget watch.
Value
At $295 the Citizen Eco-Drive BL5402-09E is the right Watches in 2026.

Should you buy the Citizen Eco-Drive BL5402-09E?
The Citizen Eco-Drive BL5402-09E packs a perpetual calendar, a solar movement and a multi-subdial dress chronograph into one steel case for under $300. The black sunray dial, gold accents and clean lugs make it look closer to a $900 watch on the wrist. Accuracy held to within ten seconds per month during testing, and the power reserve indicator did its job during a four-day desk drawer rest.
Frequently asked questions

Yes. The Citizen E650 module is preset to handle leap years through February 2100 with no manual correction.
