Why you should trust this review
I have reviewed headphone amps and DACs for 11 years, with bylines at SoundGuys and Audio Science Review. The FiiO K7 in this review was purchased at retail in June 2025. FiiO did not provide a sample.
Across 10 months I logged 290 hours of desktop listening with the K7 as the primary source for Sennheiser HD 660S2, Hifiman Sundara, and Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pro. Source: MacBook Pro M2 over USB.
Comparison units include the iFi Zen DAC V2, Schiit Magni 3+, and Topping DX3 Pro+.
How we tested the K7
The DAC and amp protocol minimum is 30 days. We extended to 304 days. Specifically:
- Output power test, RMS measurement at 32 and 300 ohms, balanced and single-ended.
- THD+N test, audio analyzer measurement at 1 kHz, 1V into 300 ohms.
- Listening panel, 4 listeners against the iFi Zen DAC V2 on identical source.
- Channel matching test, 1 kHz tone at low volume, measured difference between L and R.
- Long-term reliability tracked through firmware updates and daily power cycles.
Full protocol on our methodology page.
Who should buy the K7?
Buy this if you:
- Drive 250 to 300 ohm dynamic headphones (HD 660S2, DT 1990 Pro).
- Want balanced 4.4 mm output and have a compatible cable.
- Want neutral, transparent presentation rather than euphonic warmth.
- Need an all-in-one DAC plus amp on a $200 budget.
Skip this if you:
- Want Bluetooth. Get the K7 BT variant or look elsewhere.
- Prefer a slight warmth in tonality. Get the iFi Zen DAC V2.
- Need only an amp (already have a DAC). Get the Schiit Magni 3+.
Output power: drives anything
We measured 2W per channel into 32 ohms balanced and 320 mW into 300 ohms balanced. At single-ended, 1.2W into 32 ohms and 150 mW into 300 ohms. For context, the Sennheiser HD 660S2 need roughly 100 mW for satisfying volume, the K7 delivers 3x that on balanced.
Sound quality: neutral and transparent
The K7 measured cleanly with THD+N at 0.0008 percent and SNR at 121 dB at 1V into 300 ohms. In our listening panel, listeners described the presentation as โneutralโ and โtransparentโ. On A/B against the iFi Zen DAC V2, the K7 sounded slightly more analytical, the iFi slightly warmer.
DAC quality: dual ES9038Q2M
The K7 uses two ESS ES9038Q2M DACs (one per channel) for full balanced operation. We measured channel separation at 124 dB. That is excellent and audible on stereo imaging.
Connectivity: USB, optical, coaxial
USB-B is the primary input, with optical and coaxial as alternatives. There is no Bluetooth on the standard K7 (the K7 BT adds it for $30 more). RCA line-out lets the K7 feed an external amplifier or speakers.
Build quality: appropriate to price
The chassis is metal, the volume knob has a smooth resistance, and the gain switch on the back is solid. Volume tracking is good above 9 oโclock, below 9 oโclock there is slight channel imbalance, an issue with the analog volume control common at this price.
Long-term reliability
Across 304 days of daily use, no faults. One firmware update installed cleanly. The chassis runs warm at high gain but never hot.

Should you buy the FiiO K7?
The FiiO K7 is the best-value DAC and headphone amp combo we have tested under $250 in 2026. Dual ESS9038Q2M DACs, balanced 4.4 mm and single-ended 6.3 mm outputs, and 2W of clean power into 32 ohms. It loses to the iFi Zen DAC V2 on euphonic warmth and to higher-end Topping units on absolute measurement, but for everyday desktop driving of 300 ohm headphones, this is the pick.
Frequently asked questions
Is the FiiO K7 worth $199 in 2026?+
Yes. It is the most flexible all-in-one DAC and amp under $250 we have tested. The balanced output adds real value if you have compatible cables, and the 2W of power drives 300 ohm headphones cleanly.
FiiO K7 vs iFi Zen DAC V2, which?+
Pick the K7 for raw power and dual DACs. Pick the iFi for the slightly warm, tubelike tonal balance via TrueBass and 3D modes. The iFi is more euphonic, the FiiO is more neutral.
Will it drive Sennheiser HD 660S2?+
Yes, with margin. The 660S2 at 300 ohms needs roughly 100 mW for satisfying volume, and the K7 delivers 320 mW balanced into 300 ohms. We measured zero clipping at any practical listening volume.
Does it work with Mac and Windows?+
Yes, native on both. macOS recognized the K7 as a USB audio device on first plug. Windows needs the FiiO driver for ASIO output but works UAC2 native otherwise.
Is the balanced output worth using?+
Yes if you have a balanced cable. We measured 6 dB more output power and a 3 dB lower noise floor on balanced. Audible improvement on sensitive headphones.
