The market for planted-tank LEDs has split sharply over the past 5 years. On one end sit the high-end programmable fixtures with apps and Wi-Fi and adjustable spectrum. On the other end sit the budget LEDs that grow Anubias and not much else. The Finnex Planted+ 24/7 SE occupies a sensible middle position. After 14 months over a 40-gallon planted tank with no CO2 injection and a basic ferts regime, the Finnex has grown a respectable selection of plants without the app complications, the firmware updates, or the price premium of the high-end alternatives.

Why you should trust this review

I have run planted tanks for 9 years and currently keep both a high-tech CO2-injected setup (using the Fluval Plant 3.0) and a low-tech tank that uses this Finnex. The Planted+ 24/7 SE in this review was purchased at retail from Aquarium Co-Op in May 2025. Finnex did not provide a sample. Our planted-tank-lighting methodology is documented on our methodology page.

How we tested the Finnex Planted+ 24/7 SE

  • 14 months over a 40-gallon planted tank with no CO2 injection
  • Monthly PAR readings via Apogee MQ-510 at 6, 12, and 18 inches
  • Plant growth photography weekly across 5 species
  • 24/7 cycle clock-drift verification across the test period
  • Remote battery life tracked from new to first failure
  • Side-by-side comparison against the Fluval Plant 3.0 on a parallel high-tech tank

Who should buy the Finnex Planted+ 24/7 SE?

Buy this LED if you run a low to mid-tech planted tank, you want a built-in 24/7 cycle without app dependencies, or you keep mostly Anubias, Cryptocoryne, swords, and easy stem plants. The price-to-performance ratio is the strongest in the category.

Skip this LED if you run a CO2-injected high-tech tank with demanding species (the Fluval Plant 3.0 is the right step), if your tank is deeper than 22 inches, or if you want full spectrum control for plant coloration tuning.

PAR output: enough for the easier plants

Apogee readings at 12 inches landed at 95 umol day one and 92 umol at month 14, a 3% degradation. At 18 inches readings averaged 58 umol, on the lower end of medium light. This is the right PAR profile for Cryptocoryne, Anubias, Java fern, Echinodorus, and most stem plants without CO2. It is not enough for serious carpet plants or red color development.

24/7 cycle: the headline feature

The built-in 24/7 cycle ramps from a deep blue moonlight through a slow dawn pink-orange, into a full-spectrum midday white, then transitions through a sunset orange and back to moonlight. The cycle runs autonomously from the fixtureโ€™s internal clock. We logged less than 4 minutes of clock drift across 14 months, which is excellent for a non-network-synchronized timer.

Plant compatibility: the right species respond

Cryptocoryne wendtii produced 4 new leaves per month, Anubias barteri added 2 leaves per month at the slow expected rate, Bacopa caroliniana grew 1 inch per week and was trimmed monthly, and Vallisneria spiralis spread along the back wall steadily. Lower-PAR Rotala rotundifolia produced green growth without the red coloration that requires higher light.

Build quality and the small complaints

The aluminum body is solid, the mounting legs adjust for various tank rim widths, and the cord is generously long. The infrared remote requires line of sight, which is fine but the included CR2025 button-cell battery drained at month 8. Replacement is simple but worth knowing. The fixture has no IP rating, which means careful mounting away from splash zones is required.

โ˜… FINAL VERDICT

Should you buy the Finnex Planted+ 24/7 SE LED (36 in)?

The Finnex Planted+ 24/7 SE is the right LED for a low to mid-tech planted tank where you want planted-tank growth without the app complexity. Across 14 months on a 40-gallon setup, the built-in 24/7 cycle produced visible plant response within 6 weeks, the PAR at substrate held the published numbers, and the price is $110 less than the Fluval Plant 3.0. It is not enough light for high-demand species but it is plenty for the rest.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Finnex Planted+ 24/7 SE worth $160 in 2026?+

Yes for a low to mid-tech planted tank under 20 inches deep. The price is $110 below the Fluval Plant 3.0 and the PAR is sufficient for the most popular planted species. For high-demand tanks step up to the Plant 3.0.

Finnex Planted+ vs Fluval Plant 3.0: which should I pick?+

Finnex if you keep low to mid-tech plants and want set-and-forget operation. Fluval Plant 3.0 if you keep CO2-demanding stems, carpets, or red plants. The PAR difference is real but only matters for demanding species.

What plants will grow under the Planted+ 24/7?+

Anubias, Java fern, Cryptocoryne species, Echinodorus swords, Vallisneria, Bacopa, low-light Rotala (rotundifolia), Hygrophila, and most stem plants will grow. Eriocaulon, Ludwigia pantanal, and demanding red carpets need higher PAR.

Does the 24/7 cycle work without an app?+

Yes. The fixture has a built-in clock that runs the dawn/midday/dusk/moonlight cycle automatically. The remote provides manual override but is not required for daily operation.

Can I use it on a 30-inch deep tank?+

Not optimally. The PAR at 24 inches drops to 30-40 umol, marginal for any plant. For deeper tanks step up to the Fluval Plant 3.0 or a Twinstar.
