The Furminator Long-Hair Large is the deshedding tool we recommend for owners of long-coated double-coated breeds in the 51 to 90 lb range. The 4-inch stainless edge is shaped to pull undercoat between the teeth without cutting the topcoat, and the FURejector push-button releases the collected hair cleanly. We tested it across 4 months of weekly sessions on a 28 kg golden retriever during a fall shed cycle. House shed (measured by photographing a fixed living room rug area weekly) was visibly halved by week 4 and stayed that way through the test.

Why you should trust this review

We bought the tool at retail from a chain pet store with no manufacturer involvement. The reviewer has covered pet grooming for The Tested Hub since 2024. Each session was logged with start time, end time, and approximate volume of fur collected.

How we tested the Furminator Long-Hair Large

  • 4 month review window, October 2025 through January 2026 (peak shed season)
  • One 28 kg golden retriever
  • Weekly sessions of 10 to 20 minutes following manufacturer guideline
  • Photo of a fixed 1 m by 1 m rug area weekly under same kitchen lighting
  • Approximate volume of collected fur photographed each session

Who should buy the Furminator Long-Hair Large?

Buy if you have a long-coated double-coated breed in the 51 to 90 lb range, you accept the technique limits (no aggressive scrubbing, weekly cap), and you want real undercoat removal.

Skip if you have a non-shedding or single-coated breed (poodles, terriers, some doodles), if you cannot stick to the time limit and want unlimited use, or if your dog is under 51 lb (use the medium tool).

Undercoat removal: real and measurable

Volume of fur collected per session averaged a thick fistful in the first three sessions, then dropped to a smaller fistful as the heavy shed cycle drew down. House shed photos showed visibly less hair by week 4.

Topcoat preservation: depends on technique

We followed Furminatorโ€™s guideline of light pressure, no repeated passes over the same area, and 10 to 20 minutes per week. After 16 sessions the goldenโ€™s topcoat showed no visible damage in monthly photos.

Ergonomics

The thumb shelf and rubberized grip reduce wrist strain. We did 20 minute sessions without hand fatigue.

FURejector button: cleaner than the no-button alternatives

The push-button releases collected fur over a trash bin in a single motion. The Andis equivalent at the same price tier requires fingers in the teeth.

Value: defensible for the right dog

At $47.99 the Furminator is real money but the lifetime limited warranty and the 4-month result we saw justify it for a heavy-shedding breed. For a single-coated breed the tool is not the right choice at any price.

โ˜… FINAL VERDICT

Should you buy the Furminator deShedding Tool for Long-Hair Large Dogs?

The Furminator Long-Hair Large is the deshedding tool we recommend for long-coated breeds in the 51 to 90 lb range. The 4-inch stainless edge pulls undercoat through while leaving the topcoat intact, and the FURejector push-button releases collected fur cleanly. Real shed reduction in our test, but this is a tool that can damage coat if used aggressively. Read the technique notes.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Furminator worth $48 in 2026?+

If you have a long-coated double-coated breed (golden, husky, lab, German shepherd), yes. We saw real reduction in house shed across 4 months of weekly use.

Furminator vs Hertzko slicker: which is better?+

Hertzko is a general-purpose slicker for surface mats and topcoat tangles at a third the price. Furminator targets undercoat specifically. Many owners use both, the slicker first to detangle and the Furminator after to pull undercoat.

Will the Furminator damage my dog's coat?+

It can if used aggressively. Stick to Furminator's 10 to 20 minutes per week guideline, use light pressure, and avoid the same patch repeatedly. We saw no topcoat damage on our 4 month test using these limits.

Does it work on a poodle or non-shedding breed?+

Poodles and similar breeds do not have a true undercoat to remove. Furminator is not the right tool for them. Use a slicker brush instead.

How often should I use it?+

Furminator recommends a weekly session of 10 to 20 minutes during heavy shed seasons (spring and fall) and biweekly otherwise. We followed weekly during a fall shed and saw the most reduction by week 4.
