Why this product
The Herman Miller Aeron Size C is the version of the Aeron sized for adults 5โ10โ to 6โ6โ and up to 350 pounds. Like the Size A for petite users, the Size C is not the Size B with bigger upholstery, the frame is physically larger, the seat pan is deeper, the back is taller, and the gas cylinder lifts higher. Three real frame sizes is one of the few things mainstream office furniture brands rarely do well, and Herman Miller is one of the few who tools all three.
For taller users the dominant geometric problem with average office chairs is seat depth. A seat pan dimensioned for a 5โ10โ user ends behind the knee for that user but stops mid-thigh on a 6โ4โ user, leaving the front of the thigh unsupported and the lumbar curve roughly two inches above where it should land. Padding does not fix it. The Size Cโs seat pan is roughly an inch deeper than the Size B and the lumbar system rides correspondingly higher on the back.
For this review I reference the Herman Miller spec sheet, the official sizing chart, the Aeron showroom unit at DWR Soho, and aggregate owner reports across Amazon and Herman Millerโs direct listing.
What Herman Miller claims
Herman Miller positions the Size C as the Aeron for taller and heavier adults. The published fit window is 5โ10โ to 6โ6โ and up to 350 pounds, with overlap into Size B territory from 5โ10โ to 6โ2โ. The seat width is 29.75 inches, roughly 2.75 inches wider than the Size Bโs 27 inches. Seat pan depth is dimensioned roughly an inch deeper, and the back is roughly an inch taller.
The mechanical specifications are otherwise identical to the Size B and Size A. Same 8Z Pellicle mesh, same PostureFit SL dual lumbar system, same Kinemat tilt, same fully adjustable arm options, same 5-star aluminum base, same casters. The gas cylinder is taller, which gives the Size C a higher seat height range (16.5 to 21 inches) than the Size Bโs (16 to 20.5 inches).
Certifications are identical, BIFMA X5.1 for durability, GREENGUARD Gold for low emissions, Cradle to Cradle Silver for recyclability. The 12-year warranty is identical, parts and labor, in-home authorized service.
Who should buy the Aeron Size C
Buy the Size C if:
- You are 5โ10โ or taller, particularly if you are also over 200 pounds.
- You have sat in office chairs where the seat pan ended in the middle of your thigh, leaving your knees angled down.
- You want the Aeron warranty, breathability, and PostureFit SL lumbar in a frame that fits.
- You sit eight or more hours a day at a desk.
Skip it if:
- You are 5โ9โ or shorter, the frame will feel oversized and the lumbar will sit too high. Default to the Aeron Size B or Aeron Size A.
- You weigh over 350 pounds, look at the Steelcase Amia Big and Tall (400 lb capacity).
- You need a headrest. No Aeron has one and adding one voids the warranty. The Secretlab TITAN Evo 2022 is a better fit.
Frame geometry: the part that matters most for tall users
For taller users the dominant ergonomic variable is seat depth and lumbar height. A 6โ4โ user sitting in a Size B Aeron has the seat pan ending mid-thigh, with the front of the thigh hanging over the front edge with no support. The pelvis ends up tipped forward, the lumbar pad sits roughly two inches below the actual lumbar curve, and the user compensates by leaning back into the upper back support. Hours of that and the lower back complains.
The Size Cโs seat pan is roughly an inch deeper than the Size B and the back of the chair is roughly an inch taller. That puts the front of the seat two finger widths behind the back of the knee for a 6โ2โ user (the textbook fit), and lifts the PostureFit SL lumbar pads to where the lumbar curve actually is. This is why owner reports from tall users consistently flag the Size C as a meaningful upgrade over generic office chairs, the geometry is right rather than approximated.
8Z Pellicle mesh and PostureFit SL: identical to Size B
The mesh and lumbar system are mechanically identical to the Size B, just stretched across a larger frame. The 8Z Pellicle is the eight-zone suspension fabric across the seat and back, the PostureFit SL is the dual pad lumbar system that supports both the sacrum and the lumbar curve independently. Both adjust with thumbwheels under the back frame.
For larger users the wider frame puts the lumbar pad in the correct lateral position by default, and the lumbar pad height adjusts up to where the lumbar curve naturally lands. On a Size B for a 6โ2โ user the lumbar pad cannot be adjusted high enough.
Warranty and the heavy-duty question
The 12-year Herman Miller warranty applies to the Size C exactly as it does to the Size A and Size B, parts and labor, in-home authorized service, no exclusions for normal wear. The 350-pound BIFMA X5.1 weight rating is the standard high-end office chair rating and matches the Size B.
For users over 350 pounds, the Size C is not the right choice. The Steelcase Amia Big and Tall (400 lb capacity) or specialty chairs like the BodyBilt 3500 Big and Tall (500 lb capacity) are the right tier. Within 350 pounds, the Size C distributes the load over a wider seat pan than the Size B and is the more comfortable choice for users 230 pounds and up.

Should you buy the Herman Miller Aeron Size C Graphite?
If you are 5'10'' or taller, or you are heavier set, the Aeron Size C is the version of this chair that actually fits. The frame is dimensioned wider, the seat pan is deeper, the back is taller, and the gas cylinder lifts higher. You get the same 8Z Pellicle mesh, PostureFit SL lumbar, and 12-year warranty as the Size B for $100 more. For users above 230 pounds it is the only Aeron rated for daily use, the Size B and Size A both top out at 350 pounds but the Size C frame distributes that load over a noticeably larger seat pan.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Aeron Size C worth the $100 premium over the Size B?+
If you are 5'10'' or taller, or you are over 230 pounds, yes. The wider seat pan and deeper seat are the difference between the chair fitting and the chair feeling like a generic office chair. If you are between 5'4'' and 5'10'', the Size B is the better fit and saves $100.
How do I know if I need Size B or Size C?+
Herman Miller's official chart puts adults 5'10'' to 6'6'' in Size C, with overlap into Size B from 5'10'' to 6'2''. The simpler test, sit in the chair and see if your shoulders sit inside the frame and the seat pan ends two finger widths behind the back of your knee. If either fails on the Size B, go to Size C.
Is the Aeron Size C tall enough for users over 6'4''?+
The back of the Size C measures roughly 23 inches tall, which supports up to about the mid-shoulder for a 6'4'' user. Taller users sometimes prefer the [Steelcase Leap](/reviews/steelcase-leap-onyx) which has a noticeably taller upper back support, or the [Secretlab TITAN Evo](/reviews/secretlab-titan-evo-2022) which has a full back rest plus headrest.
Aeron Size C vs a high-back executive chair: which is better for tall users?+
For pure desk work the Aeron Size C wins on breathability, posture, and warranty. For users who lean back during calls and rest the head, an executive chair or the Secretlab TITAN Evo with a headrest is the better choice. The Aeron has no factory headrest at any size.
How does the 350 lb weight capacity compare to other heavy-duty chairs?+
The Size C is BIFMA X5.1 certified to 350 pounds, which is the standard high-end office chair rating. Heavy-duty specialty chairs like the Steelcase Amia Big and Tall go to 400 pounds, while the Branch Ergonomic Pro Chair is rated to 300 pounds. For users over 350 pounds, look at the Steelcase Amia or the Aeron's specialty heavy-duty variant.
