Why you should trust this review

I do residential and small-commercial electrical and drill a lot of enclosure knockouts. For this review I purchased the Klein 5-piece step drill set at retail and used it as my primary step drill set for four months across two panel rebuilds and a control cabinet build. No sample was provided.

A step drill is one of those niche tools that solves a specific problem far better than a twist drill. For sheet metal it is the right answer.

How we tested the Klein step drill set

  • Drilled 80+ enclosure holes in 16-gauge cold-rolled steel and aluminum.
  • Drilled 30+ holes in 18-gauge electrical box panels.
  • Used cutting fluid (Tap Magic) on every steel hole.
  • Measured each step diameter at week 0 and month 4 with a digital caliper.
  • Tested chip clearance with and without backing material. See methodology.

Who should buy the Klein step drill set?

Buy it if you drill enclosure knockouts, panel boxes, or thin sheet metal regularly. Buy it if you do HVAC duct work or appliance installation. Skip it if you only need a single size occasionally. A 1/2 inch single step drill at $20 is fine for that.

Cut quality: burr-free with cutting fluid

Holes in 16-gauge steel come out burr-free when cutting fluid is used. Without fluid the steps cut but leave a small burr that needs deburring. The cutting flute geometry is the right shape to push the chip up and out rather than packing it.

Edge retention: full at 4 months

The most-used step (7/16 inch on the largest bit) measured 0.4375 inch at week 0 and 0.4374 inch at month 4. That is no measurable wear. The smallest step (1/8 inch) is the fastest to dull in steel because it does the most work per revolution.

Step accuracy

Each step is dimensioned to a common conduit knockout. The 7/8 inch step is exactly 7/8 inch (which is the knockout for 1/2 inch trade conduit). The 1-1/8 inch step (when present on larger bits) matches 3/4 inch trade conduit. The setโ€™s step sizes are practical, not arbitrary.

Build quality

HSS with black oxide coating. Kleinโ€™s spec lists this set as imported, which surprised me. Quality is good despite the imported origin. The lifetime warranty is real and Klein replaces failures without fight.

Value vs the alternatives

At $80 the Klein 5-piece is mid-pack. Irwinโ€™s 3-piece at $49 covers most use cases. Milwaukeeโ€™s cobalt 4-piece at $99 is the upgrade for stainless work.

โ˜… FINAL VERDICT

Should you buy the Klein Tools 5-pc Step Drill Bit Set?

If you drill knockout holes in panels, sheet metal cabinets, or thin steel, the Klein 5-piece step drill set is the right tool. Each step is sharp, the cutting flute clears chips well, and the steps stop at common conduit sizes. Across 80+ holes in 16-gauge sheet, the bits showed no measurable wear. The included pouch is sturdy. The most-used bit (the 1/8 to 1/2 inch) is the workhorse. The 7/8 inch step is the practical maximum for cordless drill use without a hole saw.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Klein 5-pc set worth $80 in 2026?+

Yes for any electrician or HVAC tech who drills enclosure knockouts. Skip for occasional users, where Irwin's 3-piece set saves money.

Klein vs Milwaukee cobalt step drill: which is better?+

Milwaukee's cobalt holds up longer in stainless. Klein is cheaper for HSS work in mild steel. Choose based on the metal you cut most.

Will these drill stainless?+

Light stainless yes, regular stainless no. The HSS will dull quickly in 304 stainless. Use cobalt for any regular stainless work.

Should I upgrade from twist drills for sheet metal?+

Yes. Step drills self-center, do not require pilot holes, and produce burr-free holes. They are the right tool for sheet metal.
