Buy if you want a classic straight-cut jean that breaks in to a personal fit pattern over months of wear. Buy if you appreciate fade development. Skip if you prefer a slim, tapered silhouette (try the 511 or 512). Skip if you need stretch denim for active use; the 501 is rigid by design and only some washes include 1 to 2 percent elastane.
Denim quality and break-in
The Onewash 501 uses 14.5 oz cotton denim with a tight twill weave. Out of the box the denim feels stiff, almost like canvas. After the first three wears and one wash cycle, the fabric softens at the knees and crotch. By month 3, the jeans have developed personal whiskers at the front of the thigh and faded at the seat. Compared to softer modern jeans, the 501 takes longer to feel good but holds the broken-in shape far longer.
Fit, sizing, and shrinkage
The 501 cut is straight through the leg with a mid-rise waist. The button-fly is the headline detail and has not loosened over 10 months. Order your normal waist size in the prewashed (Onewash) version. For Shrink-to-Fit, expect about 1 inch waist shrinkage and 1 to 2 inches inseam shrinkage; size up accordingly.
Wash durability
After 22 wash cycles, the denim has faded evenly and developed character at the knees and seat without splotchy bleach spots. The button-fly buttons remain firmly attached. The inseam stitching has not pulled at the cuffs.
Long-term durability
Crotch reinforcement on a 501 typically weakens after 18 to 24 months of daily wear. Mine, at 10 months, shows no signs of thinning yet. The back pocket stitching has held up against keys and a wallet.
Style versatility
The 501 silhouette pairs well with boots, sneakers, and dress shoes. The straight leg accommodates a Red Wing Iron Ranger or a Chuck Taylor with equal ease. For a more formal look, dark indigo washes substitute for chinos.
