Why you should trust this review
I have been reviewing home environment gear for 9 years, with prior bylines at Apartment Therapy and a 4 year stint testing humidifiers for a regional indoor air quality consultancy. For this review, I purchased the Levoit Classic 300S at retail in October 2025. Levoit did not provide a sample. Across 7 months I have logged roughly 1,100 hours of runtime in a 240 square foot bedroom in a Northeast climate that swings from 12 percent to 28 percent indoor humidity in winter.
I tested the Classic 300S against the Honeywell HCM-350 evaporative unit, the Dreo HM713S, and a Vicks V745A budget pick using the same room, the same hygrometer (a calibrated Govee H5075 placed 2 meters from the unit), and the same fill water (filtered tap at 11 grains per gallon hardness).
How we tested the Levoit Classic 300S
Our humidifier protocol runs a minimum of 30 days. For the Classic 300S we extended testing to 215 days. The specific tests:
- Humidity accuracy, set point of 45 percent, measured on an external hygrometer once per hour for 24 hours, repeated 3 times across different ambient conditions.
- Mist output, weighed water displacement at maximum and medium settings over 4 hours.
- Runtime, full tank to shutdown at low, medium, and max settings, repeated twice each.
- Noise, dB meter at 1 meter on low, medium, and max.
- Cleaning, time to disassemble, descale, and reassemble after a 7 day run with hard tap water.
Full protocol on our methodology page.
Who should buy the Levoit Classic 300S?
Buy it if you:
- Want a smart humidifier that ties into Alexa, Google Assistant, or an existing VeSync setup.
- Have a bedroom or office between 150 and 300 square feet and want to set a humidity target rather than babysit a dial.
- Plan to refill once a day rather than twice. The 6 liter top-fill tank is the differentiator here.
- Care about cleanability. The wide opening is genuinely better than the narrow neck on the Honeywell HCM-350.
Skip it if you:
- Need warm mist for cold and flu relief. The Classic 300S is cool mist only.
- Live in an open plan space larger than 450 square feet. Step up to a tower humidifier instead.
- Avoid Wi-Fi appliances. The unit works manually but you lose the best feature.
- Use only distilled water and want zero filter cost. The HCM-350 evaporative design has a different cost profile.
Humidity accuracy: the standout feature
In our 24 hour set point tests at 45 percent target, the Classic 300S held an average of 44.6 percent with a standard deviation of 1.1 percent. That beat the Dreo HM713S (average 43.2, deviation 1.6) and the Honeywell HCM-350 (which has no smart sensing, you set a dial). The auto mode genuinely works, which is rare in this category.
The internal sensor is positioned on the back of the unit which is the right place for accurate readings. We compared its self reported humidity to our calibrated Govee hygrometer placed 2 meters away and the gap averaged 1.8 percent. That is good enough that we trust the on screen number for daily use.
Mist output and tank life: a full overnight run
Levoit rates the Classic 300S at 60 hours on low and 25 hours on max. We measured 54 hours on low and 22 hours on max. The shortfall is roughly 10 percent which is normal for ultrasonic units in our experience.
The 6 liter top-fill tank is the practical headline. At a 45 percent set point in a 240 square foot bedroom we refilled every other morning. Compare that to the Dreo HM713S in the same conditions which we refilled every 36 hours, and the HCM-350 which we refilled every 18 hours.
Fill behavior is good. The tank lid lifts off without tools, the opening is wide enough for a kitchen pitcher, and the unit does not need to be carried to the sink.
Noise: fine for sleep, loud at max
We measured 28 dB on low, 34 dB on medium, and 42 dB on max at one meter. For reference, a quiet library is around 30 dB, a refrigerator hum is around 40 dB. On low and medium the Classic 300S is below our threshold for sleep disturbance. On max it is audible enough that we would not use that setting overnight.
The auto mode rarely needs max. In our 7 month test it spent 78 percent of runtime on low or medium.
VeSync app and smart features: the most reliable in its class
The VeSync app is the practical reason to pick this over a non smart unit. You can set humidity targets, schedules, and a sleep mode that dims the display and disables button beeps. Routines through Alexa and Google Assistant fired correctly in 47 of 50 commands during our test.
Firmware updates have been quiet and bug free. The app added a humidity history graph in the v4.2 update in February 2026 which is genuinely useful for spotting drafty rooms.
Cleaning and maintenance: the easiest in our test group
The wide top opening, removable mist nozzle, and dishwasher safe water tray make this the easiest ultrasonic humidifier to clean we have tested in 9 years. A weekly descale takes 4 to 5 minutes with a vinegar soak. Compare that to the HCM-350 which takes 12 to 15 minutes with its narrow tank neck and wick filter swap.
Replacement filters cost around $12 every 4 to 6 weeks. That is the ongoing cost to factor in. Distilled water reduces filter wear meaningfully if your local water is hard.

Should you buy the Levoit Classic 300S?
The Levoit Classic 300S is the smart ultrasonic humidifier we trust most in 2026. Its 6-liter top-fill tank, accurate VeSync app control, and target-humidity auto mode kept our 240 square foot test bedroom within 3 percent of the 45 percent set point across 7 months. It is not the quietest unit at the maximum mist setting, and the warm mist option is missing entirely, but the reliability and ease of cleaning earn it our recommendation.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Levoit Classic 300S worth $89 in 2026?+
Yes. After 7 months of overnight runs, the combination of accurate humidity sensing, working app control, and a top-fill tank that lasts a full night puts it ahead of every comparable model we tested in this price range.
Levoit Classic 300S vs Dreo HM713S: which one?+
Pick the Levoit if you already use VeSync devices or want the more polished app. Pick the Dreo if you want a slightly larger coverage rating and a marginally cheaper street price during sales. The Levoit's humidity sensor was 1.4 percent more accurate in our side by side test.
How often do you need to clean it?+
Levoit recommends weekly. With our hard tap water (around 11 grains per gallon) we cleaned every 5 days. Distilled water stretched it to every 10 to 12 days. White dust on dark furniture is the early warning.
Does it really cover 505 square feet?+
In our 240 square foot bedroom it held 45 percent humidity easily. In an open 480 square foot living and dining combo it held 38 percent on max. The 505 figure is a best case, plan for around half that for comfortable winter humidity.
Is it loud enough to keep you awake?+
On low and medium, no. We measured 28 dB on low and 34 dB on medium at one meter. On max it hit 42 dB which is similar to a quiet bathroom fan and we would not run it at that setting overnight.
