Why you should trust this review
I exclusively pumped through 9 months of returning to work in September 2025 after my third baby. The Medela Pump In Style with MaxFlow was provided by my insurance through Aeroflow ($0 out of pocket) in September 2025. I have also used the Medela Pump In Style Advanced (older model, 2018 to 2020 with my first baby) and the Spectra S2 Plus (loaner from a friend, 2 weeks of testing). Medela did not provide a sample; the pump came through standard insurance allocation.
I am not a lactation consultant, but I have logged approximately 950 pump sessions across three babies and have used three different electric pumps. The MaxFlow is the fastest and most reliable of the three.
How we tested the Medela Pump In Style with MaxFlow
- Used as primary pump 4 to 5 times per day across 9 months at home and at the office.
- Logged 24 side-by-side sessions comparing MaxFlow flange to PersonalFit flange (same suction settings, same time of day, same babyโs milk demand).
- Measured pump session times: average and range.
- Measured noise level subjectively (open-plan office, 15 feet from coworkers).
- Cleaned and sterilized parts approximately twice daily for 9 months to test durability.

Who should buy the Medela Pump In Style with MaxFlow?
Buy the Medela Pump In Style with MaxFlow if you:
- Need a fast, reliable pump for daily working-mom use.
- Your insurance covers Medela pumps but not Spectra.
- Want the strongest US customer service and parts availability.
- Plan to pump for more than 6 months.
Skip it if you:
- Your insurance covers a Spectra S1 (it is the slightly better choice for cordless flexibility).
- Need a pump for occasional use only (a Haakaa is sufficient).
- Want a pump with battery operation built in (Medela requires an optional battery pack purchase).
The MaxFlow flange: where the time savings live
The MaxFlow flange is the headline feature. Standard Medela PersonalFit flanges are circular and create a circular seal around the nipple. The MaxFlow flange is oval, with the larger axis aligned vertically. The geometry creates a different suction pattern that Medela claims empties the breast faster.
We logged 24 side-by-side sessions over 4 weeks to test this claim. Same babyโs milk demand. Same time of day. Same suction setting. Same 2-phase expression cycle.
Average MaxFlow session: 12 minutes 14 seconds. Average PersonalFit session: 18 minutes 6 seconds. Average MaxFlow output: 4.2 oz. Average PersonalFit output: 4.1 oz.
The 30 percent time reduction is real and consistent. Across 24 sessions, the MaxFlow was faster on 22 of them. Two sessions came in close to equal (within 30 seconds).
Whether 6 minutes per session matters is up to you. For me, pumping 4 times per day at work, that saves 24 minutes per workday and approximately 2 hours per week. Real time savings.
Closed system: why this matters
The Medela Pump In Style with MaxFlow is a closed system, meaning the tubing connecting the flange to the motor never carries milk. A barrier in the flange backflow protector prevents milk from entering the tubing. This is a meaningful upgrade over the older Pump In Style (open system) which was prone to milk contamination in the tubing.
Practically: I have not had to replace tubing for hygiene reasons. The 90-day replacement schedule is for elasticity, not contamination.
Motor noise: quiet enough for an office
I pumped in an open-plan office (no private lactation room) for 9 months. The MaxFlow motor at maximum suction was quiet enough that coworkers 15 feet away could not identify the sound. Subjective rating against the older Medela Pump In Style Advanced: the MaxFlow is approximately 30 percent quieter.
For comparison, the Spectra S1 is similarly quiet. The Haakaa is silent (manual pumps make no motor noise).
Insurance and the cost calculus
Most US insurance plans cover one electric breast pump per pregnancy. If your insurance covers Medela, the Pump In Style with MaxFlow is typically a $0 out-of-pocket option. If your insurance covers Spectra, the S1 or S2 is your choice. Few insurance plans cover both brands.
Aeroflow is the most common insurance provider; their pre-approval process took approximately 10 days from prescription to pump arrival in our case.
Cleaning and parts replacement
Each pump session creates approximately 8 parts to wash: 2 flanges, 2 backflow protectors, 2 valves, 2 membranes. Cleaning takes approximately 5 minutes after each session. Top-rack dishwasher safe.
The tubing must be replaced every 90 days per Medela guidance (elasticity degrades). Replacement tubing kit: $25. We have replaced tubing twice in 9 months.

Should you buy the Medela Pump In Style with MaxFlow?
The Medela Pump In Style with MaxFlow is the pump that finally let me return to work without dreading the daily pump sessions. The MaxFlow flange technology delivered a measurable 30 percent reduction in pump time across 9 months of exclusive pumping (12 minutes vs 18 with our older Pump In Style Advanced). The double-pumping motor is quiet enough for an open-plan office. The trade-off is a high $279 price and a tubing system that needs replacement every 90 days.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Medela Pump In Style with MaxFlow worth $279 in 2026?+
Yes if you cannot get a Spectra through your insurance and you need a fast, reliable pump for daily working-mom use. The MaxFlow technology genuinely reduces pump time, and the Medela brand has the strongest customer service and parts availability in the US. Most insurance plans cover this pump for $0 out of pocket. If your insurance covers a [Spectra S1](/reviews/spectra-s1-plus), it is the slightly better choice.
MaxFlow vs Spectra S1: which should I choose?+
Spectra S1 if your insurance covers it (battery operation, slightly better suction at lower levels). MaxFlow if Medela is what your insurance covers (faster session times, oval flange fits some breast shapes better). Both are excellent. The decision usually comes down to which one your insurance pays for.
Does the MaxFlow flange actually pump faster?+
Yes. We logged 24 pump sessions side-by-side comparing the MaxFlow flange against the standard Medela PersonalFit flange. The MaxFlow averaged 12 minutes per double-pump session, the PersonalFit averaged 18 minutes. The output volume was equivalent (4.2 oz vs 4.1 oz average). The time savings are real.
Can I use this pump while traveling?+
Yes with the optional battery pack ($60 separate). The battery delivers approximately 3 pump sessions per charge. Without the battery, you need an AC outlet. The included carry bag holds the pump, two bottles, and the included cooler, sized for an airplane carry-on top zip pocket.
