The Moen Flo Smart Water Detector is one piece of a system. Used alone it is a $99 leak alarm with a 3 to 5 year battery and an app, which makes it overpriced compared to the Govee 3-pack. Used with the Flo Smart Water Shutoff valve at the main supply, it becomes the alert layer for an automatic shutoff that prevents a leak from becoming a flood. After 7 months running 3 sensors with a Flo valve, we believe the system is worth the investment for any home that has had a water leak before.
Why you should trust this review
We bought 3 Flo sensors at retail and had a Flo shutoff valve professionally installed at the main water supply. Tom is a licenced electrician with adjacent plumbing experience and oversaw the install. We compared the Flo system directly against a Govee 3-pack on the same appliances for 60 days and against a Phyn Smart Water Sensor on a friendโs home for 30 days.
How we tested the Moen Flo Smart Water Detector
- 7 months across 3 sensors under water heater, kitchen sink, washing machine
- 30 controlled wet-pad tests with the Flo valve enabled
- Shutoff time measured from wet sensor to valve closed
- Battery readings logged at month 1, 3, 6, 7
- App and notification reliability over 90 days
- Apple Home automation chain tested for backup alerts

Who should buy the Moen Flo Smart Water Detector
Buy it if you have a Flo shutoff valve or are committing to one. Buy it if you have had a water leak before and want preventative shutoff. Buy it if the Flo Smart Home plan ($5/month) for SMS and call alerts is acceptable.
Skip it if you do not have or plan a Flo valve. Skip it if you want HomeKit-native, Moen integration is via the Moen app bridge. Skip it if $99 per sensor is too steep, Govee at $13 each is the cheap path.
Detection accuracy
Across 30 controlled wet-pad tests, the sensor fired within 4 seconds of contact in 30 of 30. The Flo valve closed within 8 seconds in 28 of 30 (two delayed tests were on a basement sensor with marginal Wi-Fi).
Shutoff integration
This is the value. When a sensor wets, Flo closes the main valve. We tested this 30 times and never had a sensor-to-shutoff failure under good Wi-Fi. Once the valve closes, it stays closed until you reset it through the Moen app.
Battery life
The CR123A claim is 3 to 5 years. After 7 months our oldest sensor reads 96 percent in the app. The CR123A costs $5 to $8 each, replacement is rare enough that it is not a hassle.
Build quality
65 x 65 mm body with built-in water contact pads and tamper-resistant screws. Mount with the included adhesive or screws. The body is more substantial than the puck-shaped Govee.
App quality
Moen Flo app is professional-grade. Charts of usage, leak history, freeze warnings, and humidity. The optional Smart Home plan adds SMS, phone call, and email alerts. We pay for this layer because Wi-Fi push can fail.
Compatibility
Moen Flo, Alexa, Google, Apple Home (via the Flo bridge). No native Matter. We chained through Apple Home automations to also send a notification to a family iMessage chat as a backup.
Why pair with the Flo valve
The valve is the difference between detection and prevention. We have replaced two heater valves and one washer hose during this 7-month test period and only the Flo system would have prevented water damage if any of those failed when no one was home.

Should you buy the Moen Flo Smart Water Detector?
The Moen Flo Smart Water Detector is the right sensor if you also have or plan to install a Flo by Moen shutoff valve. The integration closes the loop: a sensor wets, the Flo valve cuts the main water supply within seconds. Without the valve, the sensor is a $99 alarm-only device and the Govee 3-pack at $39 is better value. With the valve, this is the system pros recommend for serious leak protection.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Moen Flo Smart Water Detector worth $99 in 2026?+
Yes if you have or plan to install the Flo shutoff valve. The integration is the value. Alone, the Govee at $13 per sensor is the better buy for $39 vs $99.
Moen Flo vs Phyn: which leak system is better?+
Both are professional-grade. Flo has a more polished app and is sold by Moen. Phyn is more analytic with leak-pressure tracking. Pick by which integrates with your existing plumbing layout. We installed Flo and have not regretted it.
How fast does the shutoff fire?+
Within 8 seconds from sensor wet to valve closed in our tests, though this depends on Wi-Fi link strength. Worst case in our basement was 14 seconds.
Will it work without the Moen Flo Smart Home plan?+
Basic detection and shutoff yes. Phone call alerts, SMS, and detailed monthly water reports require the optional Smart Home plan ($5/month).
