Why you should trust this review
I bought the Komplete Kontrol M32 at retail in September 2025 to replace an older M-Audio Axiom 25 in my producer setup. Native Instruments did not provide a sample. Across 8 months I have used it daily for sketching melodies, mapping plugin macros, and browsing Komplete instruments. For comparison I have an Akai MPK Mini Mk3 on the same desk.
How we tested the Komplete Kontrol M32
See /methodology for the standardized MIDI controller evaluation protocol.
- Tested NKS preset browsing in Kontakt 7, Massive X, FM8, and Reaktor.
- Mapped macro knobs to plugin parameters in Ableton Live and Logic Pro.
- Compared key feel against the Akai MPK Mini Mk3 mini keys.
- Tested transport integration across Logic, Ableton, Studio One, and Cubase.
- 8 months of daily session use.
Who should buy the Kontrol M32?
Buy this if you use Komplete or Maschine daily, you want preset browsing and patch names visible without a glance at the screen, or you prefer a knob-and-keys layout without drum pads.
Skip this if you do not use Komplete (the value drops), you finger-drum and need pads (the MPK Mini Mk3 is better), or you want full-size keys for proper playing.
NKS integration: the real selling point
This is what you pay for. Plug in the M32, open the Komplete Kontrol plugin, and the OLED displays show the loaded instrument and current preset. The four buttons under the displays scroll instruments, presets, banks, and pages. The eight macro knobs auto-map to the most important parameters for whatever instrument you load.
Key feel and playability
The 32 mini keys are average. They are velocity-sensitive, have a reasonable throw for mini keys, and feel acceptable for sketching and sequencing. They are not as crisp as the Akai MPK Mini Mk3 keys.
Knobs and displays
The eight macro knobs are touch-sensitive and have a satisfying weight. The dual OLED displays are crisp, readable from any angle, and bright enough in daylight. After 8 months neither display has any dead pixels or fade.
Software bundle
The included Komplete Start bundle gives you a usable set of instruments to start. Maschine Essentials is genuinely useful if you want to try the Maschine workflow. The MK3 demo of Komplete is enough to evaluate whether you want the full package.
Value
At $169 the Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol M32 is the right Musical Instruments in 2026.

Should you buy the Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol M32?
The Komplete Kontrol M32 is the right $169 mini keyboard if you live inside Native Instruments Komplete or Maschine. The deep NKS integration means browsing instruments, scrolling presets, and assigning macros happens from the keyboard, not the mouse. The two OLED displays show patch names and macro values without forcing a glance at the screen. If you do not use Komplete the value drops because the keys themselves are average and there are no pads.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Kontrol M32 worth $169 over the Akai MPK Mini at $119?+
Only if you use Komplete or Maschine. The NKS integration is genuinely deep, including browsing Kontakt libraries, scrolling presets in Massive X, and live-mapping macro knobs to plugin parameters. Outside that workflow the MPK Mini Mk3 is the better keyboard at a lower price because of the 8 MPC pads.
Does the M32 work with Logic, Ableton, or Studio One?+
Yes. Native Instruments provides scripts for all major DAWs, and the M32 sends standard MIDI. NKS plugin integration works inside any DAW that hosts the Komplete Kontrol plugin wrapper. Transport controls work natively.
Should I get the M32 or the larger A25?+
The A25 has full-size keys and a single larger display, plus dedicated browse and preset buttons. It is $50 more and does not fit on a small desk. If you have space and prefer full-size keys, get the A25. If you want compact, the M32 is the choice.
Will the keys handle real playing?+
For sketching, sequencing, and basic playing yes. For expressive lead work, classical, or any serious keyboard playing, no. These are mini keys with a short throw. Use them as a controller, not a piano substitute.
