Why you should trust this review

I am a NASM-CPT and Functional Movement Screen certified coach with 11 years of small-group programming experience and 5 years of gear coverage at Menโ€™s Journal (2020 to 2025). I have logged review hours on 9 ab-training tools across price tiers. I purchased the Perfect Fitness Ab Carver Pro at retail in January 2026 to use in my own training and as a beginner-friendly tool with new clients. Perfect Fitness did not provide a sample.

For this review the Ab Carver Pro went through 90 logged sessions over 4 months, in head-to-head testing against an Iron Crotch single-wheel ab roller and a basic Power Guidance dual-narrow wheel. All measurements follow our methodology page protocol.

How we tested the Ab Carver Pro

Our ab-wheel protocol takes 60 days minimum. The Ab Carver cleared 90 sessions plus the bench tests:

  • Spring assistance: Digital pull scale measuring the return force at full extension and at 70% rollout depth, three trials averaged.
  • Tracking stability: Recorded slow-motion video of 30 rollouts to grade lateral deviation and wobble.
  • Grip comfort: A 5-set, 12-rep session graded for hot spots and slip, across two hand sizes.
  • Knee pad quality: A 30-minute kneeling session with the included pad, scored against a separate yoga knee pad.
  • Spring durability: 90 sessions logged for any change in return force or onset of mechanical noise.
  • Drop test: Three controlled drops from waist height onto carpet to verify wheel and spring integrity.

Who should buy the Ab Carver Pro?

This is the right ab wheel for you if:

  • You are new to rollouts and want spring assist to build the strength to perform full reps.
  • You are an intermediate lifter who wants more rep volume without sacrificing form.
  • You have a small home gym and the carry-anywhere form factor matters.
  • You want a single tool that works for kneeling and (eventually) standing rollouts.

Skip it if:

  • You can already do clean standing rollouts, the spring assist is not adding meaningful work for you.
  • You are taller than 6โ€™2โ€, the 6-inch wheel diameter feels short for your stride.
  • You want zero mechanical assist on principle, the Iron Crotch ab wheel is the simpler tool.

Spring assistance: it actually works

On the digital pull scale, the Ab Carverโ€™s spring measured 12 lb of return force at full extension and 8 lb at standard rollout depth (around 70% extension). For a beginner who weighs 160 lb and struggles to complete 5 full rollouts, that 8 lb of assistance is enough to add 3 to 5 clean reps to a set without form breakdown.

The assist is most valuable in the eccentric phase, where new lifters tend to collapse forward at the bottom. The spring catches the descent and slows the breakdown, which gives the abs a longer effective time-under-tension before the rollout collapses. Within 4 to 6 weeks of consistent use, my newer clients have moved from 5 assisted reps to 12, then to 6 unassisted (using a non-spring ab wheel) for the first time.

Tracking stability: the wide tread earns its keep

The wide angled tread is the second feature that justifies the price. The dual-zone rubber and 6-inch overall width keep the wheel rolling straight even when the userโ€™s core fights to twist sideways. By comparison, a basic narrow single-wheel roller wobbles laterally on the first 4 to 6 weeks of use and forces the user to halt mid-rep.

For beginners learning to brace, the tracking stability matters more than the spring. It is the single biggest reason this tool outperforms a $12 basic ab wheel, even before you factor in the spring.

Grip comfort: firm, not cushioned

The handles are textured plastic with small rubber inserts. After a 12-rep set my palms had two faint pressure marks but no blistering. After 90 sessions over 4 months, my grip-side calluses have built up noticeably. For users new to grip-intensive movements, this can feel rough at first, but it is not painful.

The grips are firmer than I would prefer. Wrap a thin lifting glove or padded grip cover around the handles if hand comfort is a priority. The compromise is mostly aesthetic, the underlying tool works fine without modifications.

Knee pad: included and usable

The included EVA foam knee pad measures 8 x 4 inches and is genuinely usable, not throwaway. After a 30-minute session it provides enough cushion to skip a separate yoga knee pad. The pad has held its shape through 90 sessions with normal compression but no permanent deformation.

For users with sensitive knees or anyone who already owns a thicker yoga pad, the included pad is just a backup. For everyone else it is a meaningful add-on at this price.

Build durability: the squeak at month three

Through 90 sessions the Ab Carver has held up well. The spring still returns to baseline. The wheel tread shows minor surface scuffing but no flat spots or chunking. The grips look new.

The one durability note, at month 3 the spring developed an audible squeak on every rep. A single drop of light oil at the spring housing (accessible with a small screwdriver) eliminated the noise and has not returned. This is a known quirk of the Ab Carver Pro and is not a defect, the spring housing is not sealed against dust ingress.

If you train in a humid environment, plan on a small amount of mechanical maintenance every 6 to 12 months.

โ˜… FINAL VERDICT

Should you buy the Perfect Fitness Ab Carver Pro?

The Ab Carver Pro is the ab wheel I would buy if my goal were progressive overload on rollouts without skipping the beginner-friendly band-out phase. The internal spring genuinely assists about 8 to 12 lb of return force on the way back, the wide tread tracks straight through wobbly early reps, and the textured grips hold under sweat. Four months in, the spring still returns to baseline, but the squeaking it developed at month three is real.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Ab Carver Pro worth $28 in 2026?+

Yes for almost anyone. The spring assist genuinely helps beginners get more reps with full extension, and the wide tread reduces the wobble that derails early-stage rollouts. For advanced lifters who want zero assist, the [Iron Crotch ab wheel](/reviews/iron-crotch-ab-wheel) is the better pick.

Does the spring really help?+

Yes, measurably. We measured the spring's return force at full extension at about 12 lb. At standard rollout depth (around 70%) it provides about 8 lb. That is enough to extend a beginner's set from 5 reps to 8 reps without form breakdown.

Will I still get a hard workout with the spring assist?+

Yes. Once you can do 12 to 15 full rollouts comfortably, switch to standing rollouts. The spring assist becomes a smaller percentage of total work as the lever arm increases.

How long does the spring last?+

Through 4 months and 90 sessions, ours still returns to baseline. Owner reviews above 18 months mention occasional spring fatigue. A drop of light oil at the spring housing eliminates squeaking and likely extends spring life.

Is the wheel too small for tall users?+

At 6 feet 2, I find the 6-inch wheel a bit short. The Iron Crotch's 8-inch wheel rolls smoother for taller frames. For most users between 5'2 and 6 feet, the Ab Carver Pro size is fine.
