Why you should trust this review

I purchased the PreSonus AudioBox GO at retail in late December 2025 to evaluate as a budget mobile interface for travel and beginner recommendations. PreSonus did not provide a sample. Across 4 months it lived in a backpack and saw use as a portable recording rig on two short trips, plus comparison sessions in my home studio against the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 4th Gen and UA Volt 2.

This review reflects PreSonusโ€™s published specifications, Amazonโ€™s aggregate of 1,820 owner reviews (averaging 4.5 of 5), and 4 months of direct use including mobile recording.

How we tested the PreSonus AudioBox GO

See /methodology for the standardized audio interface evaluation protocol.

  • Driver stability: Used on M2 MacBook Pro for daily sessions, Windows 11 for occasional sessions, iPad Pro for mobile.
  • Preamp quality: Tracked Shure SM7B and Audio-Technica AT2020 vocals, A/B compared against the Scarlett 2i2 4th Gen.
  • Latency test: Measured round-trip latency in Studio One Prime, Logic Pro, and Ableton Live.
  • Mobile use: Used on two short trips for songwriting demos.
  • Long-term: 4 months of regular but not daily use.

Who should buy the PreSonus AudioBox GO?

Buy this if:

  • You are a true beginner and want the cheapest credible recording setup.
  • You record one source at a time (vocal or instrument, not both simultaneously).
  • You travel with a recording rig and want minimum size and weight.
  • You want a full DAW (Studio One Prime) bundled at no extra cost.

Skip this if:

  • You can stretch to $199. The Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 4th Gen is meaningfully better.
  • You record two sources at once (two mics, one mic + one instrument simultaneously).
  • You demand premium build quality.

Preamps and conversion

The XMAX-L preamps have enough clean headroom for most condensers and dynamic mics. A Shure SM7B (low-output) tracked at high gain is slightly noisy but usable. An Audio-Technica AT2020 (typical condenser) tracks comfortably in the upper-quarter of the gain knob.

A/B against the Scarlett 2i2 4th Gen, the PreSonus is slightly noisier at high gain and slightly less clean. For most home recording the difference is subtle. For demanding low-output mic work, the Focusrite wins.

The 24-bit / 96 kHz conversion is transparent enough for serious recording. The Scarlett goes to 192 kHz which most home users do not need.

Software bundle: real value at $79

Studio One Prime is a complete DAW with realistic limitations (track count, plug-in formats). For a beginner it has everything needed to record, edit, and mix simple projects. The Studio Magic plug-in suite adds useful basics: a compressor, EQ, reverb, and synth.

For a buyer at this price point, the included DAW is a real value-add that the bare-bones Behringer alternatives lack.

Build and connectivity

The plastic chassis feels lighter and less premium than the Scarlett or Volt 2. After 4 months of travel use, mine shows minor scuffs but no structural damage. The USB-C to USB-A cable is included and works on most laptops.

The bus-powered USB-C connection works on USB-C iPads without an adapter. iOS class-compliance is solid.

Long-term and value

After 4 months the AudioBox GO has not failed, disconnected, or required driver reinstalls. It is reliable for the price.

At $79 the PreSonus AudioBox GO is the cheapest credible audio interface in 2026. The Audient EVO 4 at $129 is a real step up with two combo inputs. The Scarlett 2i2 4th Gen at $199 is the long-term answer. For a beginner with strict budget, the PreSonus is the right starting point.

โ˜… FINAL VERDICT

Should you buy the PreSonus AudioBox GO?

The PreSonus AudioBox GO is the cheapest audio interface I would recommend in 2026. The XMAX-L preamps have respectable headroom for one mic source, the 24-bit conversion is clean enough for serious recording, and the included Studio One Prime DAW gives a beginner everything they need to start. The trade is fewer features than a Scarlett 2i2 4th Gen and a less polished driver experience.

Frequently asked questions

Is the PreSonus AudioBox GO worth $79 in 2026?+

Yes, for a beginner with strict budget constraints. The XMAX-L preamp is good enough for most home recording, the bundled Studio One Prime is a complete DAW, and the build is functional if not premium. If you can stretch to $199 the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 4th Gen is a meaningfully better instrument.

AudioBox GO vs Scarlett 2i2 4th Gen: how big is the gap?+

Real but proportional to price. The Focusrite has two combo inputs (vs one mic + one instrument), better preamps with more headroom, more reliable drivers, and the useful Auto Gain feature. The PreSonus is a credible $79 starter. The Focusrite is the long-term answer at more than twice the price.

Will the AudioBox GO work for podcasting?+

For solo podcasting, yes. The single mic input handles a USB or XLR mic for one host. For two-host podcasts you would need a second mic input, which means stepping up to the Scarlett 2i2 or PreSonus AudioBox iTwo. For solo work this is the cheapest credible option.

Is Studio One Prime a real DAW?+

Yes. Studio One Prime is the free version of PreSonus's flagship Studio One DAW with limitations on track count and plug-in formats. For learning and most beginner projects it is fully functional. Many users upgrade to Studio One Pro after outgrowing Prime.

How is the latency for tracking?+

Acceptable. At 128-sample buffer in Studio One on M2 Mac, round-trip latency is roughly 9 ms, low enough for most tracking. At 64 samples it is roughly 5 ms, which works for tight performance but increases CPU use. For complex sessions, the Scarlett 2i2 4th Gen handles low-buffer tracking more comfortably.
